Patrick Sammon and Rafael Miroslaw to Swim-Off After Tying for 8th in 200 Free Prelims

2023 NCAA DIVISION I MEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Heading into the final heat of the 200 free this morning, it looked like a swim-off could be imminent as Mizzou’s Jack Dahlgren and Texas’ Coby Carrozza were tied for 5th at 1:32.06.

But that swim-off didn’t materialize, as the entire final heat was slower than their time. However, that final heat did see Indiana’s Rafael Miroslaw swim a 1:32.28 for 2nd in the race, a time which tied Arizona State’s Patrick Sammon‘s time from heat 4. That tie for 8th means that the two swimmers will face off in a swim-off later in the session to determine who advances to the A-final.

The Sun Devils already have two men securely in the A-final, thanks to Julian Hill and Grant House, while Miroslaw is the Hoosiers’ only scorer in the event. The Sun Devils hold a 55-point lead over the Hoosiers heading into today’s competition, and getting a third man into the A-final will help them immensely in what’s shaping up to be a close race in the team standings.

Niether Sammon nor Miroslaw hit lifetime bests this morning. Sammon’s best is a 1:31.82 from the Pac-12 Championships a few weeks ago, while Miroslaw’s is a 1:31.89 from last year’s Big Ten Championships.
