USA Swimming has made a change on its roster for the 2015 World University Games, swapping Paul Powers in place of Caeleb Dressel in the men’s 50 free. Now Powers will represent the United States on the team that travels to the biannual competition bringing the world’s university athletes together in an effort to promote competition and cultural understanding. The 2015 event will take place in Gwangju, South Korea from July 3rd-14th.
The change will be an even one-to-one swap, as Dressel was entered only in the 50 free formally (though an appearance in a 400 free relay was likely). Roster spots were initially filled on the basis of the top eligible athletes from the “A” and “B” finals at this summer’s National Championship meet.
In that 50 free, Dressel won the B-Final with a 22.50, while Powers swam a 22.91 for 13th-place overall. They were the second-and-third fastest eligible and available swimmers behind Cal’s Seth Stubblefield who swam a 22.34 for 7th in the A-Final. Stubblefield is still listed as swimming both the 50 and 100 free at the World University Games.
Dressel is currently a freshman at the University of Florida and Powers is currently a freshman at the University of Michigan.
Does USA Swimming cover the cost for swimmers to attend WUG?
