Paulson hits 100th event win, but Kansas leads Iowa State after day 1

Iowa State Cyclone senior Amanda Paulson got her 100th career win Friday night after taking the 50 free against Kansas, but it’s the Jayhawks who lead the meet 94-56.

Paulson, who went 3-for-4 last week to get to 99 career victories, had to wait until the last event of Friday’s meet for her shot at the win. The senior went 23.68 to rocket to the win by half a second and crack triple digits for her career.

That was one of three Iowa State wins on the day, with the other swimming victory coming from freshman Kasey Roberts in the 100 breast (1:04.39 and a tight touchout over Kansas Jayhawk Bryce Hinde). Julie Dickinson also won 3-meter diving with a score of 308.63.

But outside of those three, it was all Kansas. The Jayhawk’s versatile star Chelsie Miller won twice, pairing the 1000 free (10:09.93) with the 200 fly (2:03.33) for a pair of dominant victories.

Haley Molden won the 200 free for the Jayhawks (1:51.71) and Yulduz Kuchkarova had herself a big night to account for two wins. Kuchkarova took the 100 back individually in 55.66, and staked her 200 medley relay team to a big lead with a 25.87 leadoff leg. The team would go on to win in 1:43.42.

With one day of action left to go, Kansas leads Iowa State 94-56 in Big 12 conference action. Tomorrow’s meet begins at 10 AM in Lawrence, Kansas.
