Many thanks to Shvoong for sharing their coverage of 2015 European Short Course Championships with SwimSwam.
Adam Peaty completed day 4 of the 2015 European Short Course Championships with a 2nd place finish in the men’s 100m breaststroke final. He touched the pads in a time of 56.96, 0.12 splits slower than his semi final swim from the night before. Germany’s Marco Koch won the event in a new national record time of 56.78.
In his post race interview, Peaty speaks about not resting for this competition and using the short course meter meet as a training week. He talks about his future in short course meter swimming and hopefully being able to improve when swimming short course meters in the years to come.
The world champion and world record holder is a significantly better swimmer long course and is looking forward to the upcoming Olympic season. He is described as the slowest underwater swimmer but the fastest on the surface, and this is where his short course swimming is affected. In response to this comment he says, “I put more work into my on top of the water stuff but that gives me a huge confidence boost long course because people aren’t going to have the turns and as much of a dive.”
Although he hoped to have had a better swim in the final than he did in the semi final of his 100m breast, he is still pleased with his result as he gave the race his best shot.
The only weakness he has at the moment is swimming slower in finals than semi-finals. I’ve picked up on this, so you can be CVB and the others have to. The extra intensity of finals seem to slow him down by a few tenths.
If he can work out this small chink in his armour, I’ve no doubt he’ll win the 100 at Rio. If he makes the team in the 200 (Murdoch/Jamieson to beat at trials), I think he’ll medal in that event too.
Great answers form a great swimmer.
