With his prelim and semi-final swims today, Britain’s Adam Peaty now owns the ten fastest swims in the history of the men’s 100 breaststroke.
Peaty first clocked in at 58.21 in the morning preliminaries, which was the 7th fastest swim ever at the time, and gave him nine of the ten fastest swims in history. It also just missed his World Championship Record of 58.18, set back in 2015 when he won his first World title.
It was inevitable that after the semi-finals he would own the ten fastest performances ever, and he didn’t disappoint with a clocking of 57.75. The 4th fastest swim of all-time gives him the ten fastest performances ever and lowers his meet record by over four tenths of a second.
The swim bumps South African Cameron van der Burgh off the list, who won the 2012 Olympic gold in 58.46. He surprisingly did not show for the prelims this morning, and as result Americans Kevin Cordes and Cody Miller have become the favorites for the minor medals. Cordes broke the American Record in the semi-finals in 58.64, qualifying 2nd, and Miller qualified 3rd for the final in 59.08.
