Two hundred sixty seven swimmers took to the open water off Ft. Lauderdale for the 2013 International Swimming Hall of Fame Open Water Swim. This was the 43rd anniversary of the event which takes place on Ft. Lauderdale’s main beach adjacent to the ISHOF complex. The one mile swim featured age group, collegiate and masters divisions.
USA Open Water National Team member Joey Pedraza dominated the field in the mens race and captured his fourth title in this annual event. Pedraza, a graduate of University of Florida is currently training with the Davie Nadadores Swim Team under Coach Alex Pussieldi. Pedraza was 4th in the 10K at the 2012 USA Swimming National Championship which were held in Ft. Meyers.
On the women’s side Brazil’s Ana Marcela Cunha captured the top spot. Cunha represented Brazil at the inaugural Olympic marathon swim in Beijing and was the 2011 FINA World Champion in the 25K event. Ana Marcela is also currently training with the Davie Nadadores as she prepares for the 2013 FINA open water circuit.
Although the swimmers had to face a bit of rain, the event was very well organized by the International Swimming Hall of Fame. This event which typically takes place on the first weekend in January is a good event to consider for your 2014 calendar.
