Penn Men, Villanova Women Earn Wins In Split

PHILADLEPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania swimming and diving program split a pair of close duals with cross-town rival Villanova tonight. The men won the dual with a 160-96 decision while the women were edged, 157-102.

The Quakers won 15 total events on the night, with the men topping the podium in 11 and the women standing on top in four.

Recapping the Women
Grace Giddings started the meet by improving her collegiate-best time in the 1,000 free with a first place finish in the event, clocking in at 10:11.07. The time shaves off six seconds from her previous collegiate best, set last weekend at Columbia. Hannah Kannan (55.79) and Tara Larusso (57.46) kept things going as the sophomore duo took first and second, respectively, in the 100 back.

Serena Xue swam a strong final 100 and stretched to touch the wall first for a win in the 200-breast, edging Villanova’s Kaitlin Gravell by less than two-tenths of a second. Giddings (500 free, 5:01.23) and Kannan (100 fly, 56.33) rounded out the results for Penn with a pair of second-place finishes

Recapping the Men
Penn started strong, taking the top two spots in the meet’s first event—the 200 medley relay. Penn’s Mark McCraryNeil Simpson, Eric Detrich, and Nathaniel Cunnan swam a 1:33.63. Matt Haigh (9:37.95) followed the win with a first-place finish in the 1,000 free, edging Villanova’s Jake McIntyre by less than a second.

Freshman Matt Bonnell continued a positive start to his career at Penn with his second win in as many meets, topping the podium in the 200 free (1:42.12). Fellow freshmen, Neil Simpson (2:07.74) and Eric Wang took the top two spots in the 200 breast, beating out the rest of the competition by over two seconds.

In the 100 breast, Alec Hsing (58.33) and Eric Wang (58.48) dualed it out to take the top two spots on the podium.

In the 200 fly, Penn again finished first and second. William Kamps led the charge with a 1:51.50 finish followed by Jason Schreiber, who clocked in at 1:54.72.

The Quakers then showed strength in the sprints. Cunnan (20.94) and Matthew Dieffenthaller (21.11). finished first and second in the 50 free. In the next event, Dieffenthaller stayed in the water to tie Kamps for first in the 100 free (46.41).

As has been the case for much of this season, the Quakers dominated the 500 free. Tonight, Penn clocked the top three times. Will Thomas (4:36.57) dominated for a first-place finish, followed by Vlad Elizarov (4:41.27) and Billy Fallon (4:47.18).

Penn bookended the results with the top time in the meet’s final event—the 200 free relay. Though the swim was scratched, Boris Yang, Fallon, Elizarov, and CJ Hinckley finished with the event’s top time, clocking in at 1:26.76.

UP NEXT
The Quakers dive right back into action tomorrow with an Ivy League dual meet against Brown. The action will occur at Sheerr pool starting at noon.

PHILADELPHIA, Pa – Villanova swimming and diving split a pair of duals on the road at Penn on Friday night. The women’s side took the contest, 157-102, while the men fell to the Quakers, 160-96.

The Wildcats had 41 top-three finishes, touching the wall first 14 times. The women topped the podium 10 times and the men stood on top four times.

Milly Routledge continued her strong season, taking first in the 200 freestyle (1:51.66), 50 freestyle (23.77) and the 100 freestyle (51.39). Anna Turner placed second in the 200, while Abbey Berloco finished second in the 50 and 100 freestyle.

Kelly Montesi also had a big day, taking the top spot in the 200 butterfly, 200 back and 100 butterfly with times of 2:02.26, 1:59.95 and 55.78, respectively. Nicole Welch took first in the 500 free, swimming 4:59.13, and finished second in the 1,000 free. 

Margaret Kleinsmith took first in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:05.85 and Kaitlin Gravell picked up a first-place finish in the 200 IM, swimming 2:07.30. Villanova also placed first in both the 200 medley relay and the 200 freestyle relay. Bridie Dunn took first in the 1m dive with a score of 269.32 and second in the 3m dive with a score of 250.87.

Justin Cucchi put on a show for the men’s side, taking the top spot in the 200 back and the 200 IM. The senior swam the first event in 1:51.07 and the latter in 1:55.58. Cucchi also took second in the 200 freestyle.

Andrew Kelley claimed first overall by swimming 50:59 in the 100 back. Michael Perra finished first in the 1m dive with a score of 288.90, and placed second in the 3m dive with a score of 292.57. Villanova’s men’s team had 17 top-three finishes on the day.

The Wildcats will continue their road trip on Nov. 21 when they head to West Virginia for the Mountaineer Invite. That competition spans from Nov. 21 to Nov. 23.
