Penn State Men Win Second-Straight THON Dance Off to Raise Money for Children’s Cancer Charity

The Penn State men’s swim team took a break from tapering this weekend to win their second-straight THON 2014 Pep Rally dance competition.

This dance marathon begins at 6PM on Friday and runs until 4PM on Sunday, where students are invited to stay on their feet and dance for 46-straight hours. All of the teams on campus compete during “athlete hour” for top honors, and the swim team has won for the 2nd-straight year. That’s especially impressive given that Penn State has a gymnastics team – whom one might imagine would have an advantage in a dance competition.

Note: that’s senior Tom Mershon at the front with all of the slick dance moves.

No, we’ve been assured that the Nittany Lions men didn’t dance the full 46 hours, so they’ll be locked-in when Big Tens start on Wednesday in Ann Arbor – they did bring some good attention to the program, contributed to a great charitable cause, and have been making the local radio tour on Monday to talk about the big win.

The event is run by Penn State’s IFC/Panhellenic group, and raises money for the Four Diamonds Fund – a group that works with the Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital to raise money to fight childhood cancer. In total, this event has raised $101 million for the Four Diamonds Fund since it began in 1977.

See the team’s 2013 winning rendition below. In our opinion, 2014 is even better, aside from the swimming scene – and if they continue improving, it’s hard to see this team ever losing this competition again.
