Penn State Nittany Lions Snag Verbal from Sprinter Maddie Cooke

Maddie Cooke, a senior at Phoenixville Area High School in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, has made a verbal commitment to the Pennsylvania State University for 2017-18.

“I am SO excited to announce that I have verbally committed to further my education and swimming career at Penn State University!! I chose Penn State because of the outstanding coaching staff, the immediate connection I felt with the team, as well as the world class education that I will receive.  I also want to thank all my coaches, family, friends, and most importantly teammates that have never stopped believing in me and helped to make my dreams come true!! I cannot wait be a NittanyLion…WE ARE!!!!! ????

Cooke is a two-time USA Swimming Scholastic All-America Team member and a three-time NISCA All-American. She was a member of Phoenixville Area YMCA Swim Team for 10 years but is currently training under coach Charlie Kennedy of the Suburban Seahawks in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania.

Cooke has been an A-finalist in the 100 breast at YMCA National championships in each of the last three years; she has also finaled in the 50 free and 200 breast and swam breast on Phoenixville’s second-place 200 medley relay and third-place 400 medley relay.

At the 2016 PIAA Girls AAA Swimming & Diving Championships, Cooke was sixth in both the 50 free (23.60) and the 100 breast (1:03.39). In 2015 she was third in the 50 and ninth in the breast, and in 2014 she was runner-up in the breast and took third in the 50 free at the AA State Meet.

Camryn Barry, Carly Hart, and Jane Donahue have also verbally pledged to join the Nittany Lions’ class of 2021.
