Penn State Sweeps Navy In Season Opener

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State Women’s Swimming & Diving team began their regular season with a win over Navy, earning a 209-91 win on Saturday afternoon at McCoy Natatorium. The Nittany Lions swept four events – the 100 back, 50 free, 100 free and 200 back. They were led by Madison MurtaghAbbie Amdor and Marie Schobel, each winning two individual events.

“There’s always an excitement about the first meet of the year,” Head Coach Tim Murphy said, “coupled with the team seeing family and friends fill up the stands – there was a great energy in here. It came from the Navy’s men and women’s teams, and it came from our team, and it came from the stands and it came from the diving boards. It’s a really cool place (McCoy Natatorium) when that happens. So it felt good.”

Top Swims
In the freestyle, senior Madison Murtagh took home two wins for the Nittany Lions in the 1000 free (10:14.20) and 500 Free (4:55.23).

Junior Abbie Amdor also had an impressive performance in the freestyle, winning both the 200 free (1:49.11) and 100 free (50.72).

Amdor led Penn State in sweeping the 100 free as sophomore Cat Stanford (51.09) placed second and freshman Marly Lough (51.57) came third.

Senior Marie Schobel led Penn State in sweeping the backstroke events, winning the 100 back in 54.70 and the 200 back in 1:58.67. In the 100 she was followed by freshman Molly Carson (55.33) and junior Emma Harvey (55.75). In the 200 Carson (2:02.14) finished second while sophomore Abby Henderson (2:03.26) finished third.

Henderson finished the day with a win in the 200 IM (2:05.90).

Stanford won the 50 free in 23.18. Junior Ellie Tiskus (23.89) followed her to second and sophomore Mary Brinker (23.94) finished third.

Graduate student Maddie Cooke won the 100 breast in 1:03.57 and was followed by senior Olivia Jack (1:04.44) in second.

Sophomore Kylie Rydland (2:20.68) finished first in the 200 breast.

Nittany Lion Relays
The Nittany Lions opened the meet with a one-two finish in the the 200 medley relay. The team of Schobel, Cooke, Harvey and Stanford won the event in 1:40.16 while Carson, Jack, Maura Fluehr and Lough took second in 1:42.85.
The 400 free relay team of Lough, Amdor, Stanford and Fluehr won the event with a time of 3:25.07 to finish the meet.

Top Dives
Junior Wei Wei won the women’s 1-meter dive with a score of 261.60, narrowly missing an NCAA zone cut.

Senior Sierra Shurts impressed with an NCAA zone cut in the 3-meter (281.63) and finished second in the event.

Next Up
The women’s team will head to West Virginia to compete at 6 p.m. next Friday, Oct. 16.

“Starting the season with a win is important,” said Amdor. “This made everyone excited for the next meet coming up in less than a week. Everyone’s dialed in and pumped for the next one.”

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State Men’s Swimming and Diving team defeated Navy, 181-119, in their first meet of the 2021-2022 season. The Nittany Lions captured 10 individual event wins and both relay events.

Top Swims:
Some of the standout swimmers for the men’s team today were Will Roberson, Michael DalyDaniel Raisanen, and Victor Baganha. To start off the meet, the Nittany Lions 200 Medley Relay team came in first place with the help of Roberson, Raisanen, Bagnanha, and Houck. They finished with a total time of 1:27.64.

The Nittany Lions swept the Midshipmen in the 100 Freestyle with Victor Baganha in first with a time of 44.50. Coming in second place was Tommy Hurley with a time of 45.67. Zane Sutton came in third place with a time of 46.34.

Winners:
Michael Daly won the 200 Freestyle with a time of 1:37.82.

In the 100 Breaststroke, Daniel Raisanen won with a time of 54.89.

In the 200 Butterfly, Samuel Folger lead the way with a time of 1:50.27.

In the 50 Freestyle race, Victor Baganha took first with a time of 19.99 while Jake Houck claimed second with a time of 20.18.

In the 100 Freestyle heat, Baganha took first again with a time of 44.50. Tommy Hurley followed in second place with a time of 45.67 and Zane Sutton coming in third with a time of 46.34.

In the 200 Backstroke ,Daly took first place with a time of 1:45.94 and Jack Harvey came in third with a time of 1:52.46.

Raisanen took first in the 200 Breaststroke with a time of 2:01.19.

Daly won the 200 IM with a time of 1:48.80 followed by William Lulek with 1:53.01.

The 400 Freestyle Relay A of Baganha, Roberson, Houck, and Daly claimed first place with a time of 2:58.87.

Diving: 
The Nittany Lions beat the Midshipmen in the diving game. Jonah Cey qualified for NCAA zone championships with a score of 301.88 in the men’s 1 meter and 333.83 in the 3-meter dive.

What is next:
The Nittany Lions will travel to West Virginia next week for their second meet of the season on Saturday, October 16th at 11am.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. –– The Navy swimming and diving teams opened their 2021-22 seasons with losses at Penn State, Saturday at McCoy Natatorium in University Park, Pa.  The Nittany Lions won the men’s meet by the score of 181-119 and the women’s dual by the score of 209-81.

“While we would have loved to come away with a win today, we were pleased with the way we competed against a Big Ten Conference team,” said Navy women’s swimming head coach John Morrison.  “Hats off to the Penn State coaches as their team was very sharp for the first meet of a season.  It was a great meet to see where we are in training, and it really helped to define our way forward.  We learned a ton and can’t was to get back to work.”

“It was excellent to be back in competition,” said Navy men’s swimming head coach Bill Roberts.  “The teams on each side of the pool were ready to compete today.  Penn State deserves a lot of credit as they were really strong from the beginning to the end of the meet.  We were pleased with the times and scores today, though we were hoping to be more competitive against Penn State.  This was a very good starting point for our program as we look forward to our upcoming meets.”

Sydney Harrington (Sr., Fairfax, Va.) was Navy’s lone multi-event winner on the day as she placed first in both the 100 (54.60) and 200 (2:00.82) butterfly races.  Joining her from the women’s team in winning an event was diver Hannah Montau (Sr., Germantown, Md.) as she scored 309.08 points to win the three-meter board.

Martina Thomas (Sr., Fayetteville, Ark.) placed second in both the 200 and 500 freestyle races, Montau won the silver medal on the one-meter board, Emily Brockman (Sr., Bend, Ore.) finished in second place in the 200 breaststroke and Haley Harris (Fr., St. John’s, Fla.) was the second-place finisher in the 200 individual medley.

The Navy men’s team combined to win four events on the day.  Everet Andrew (Fr., Wilmette, Ill.) won the 1000 freestyle (9:25.25), Caleb Mauldin (Sr., Chesapeake, Va.) took first place in the 100 backstroke (48.76), Garrett McGovern (So., Nashville, Tenn.) won the 500 freestyle (4:33.02) and Pat Colwell (So., New Canann, Conn.) was the winner of the 100 butterfly race (48.66).

Navy also recorded eight second-place showings during the men’s meet.  This included McGovern finishing second to Andrew in the 1000 free, Andrew placing second to McGovern in the 500 free, Mauldin touching the wall second in the 200 backstroke and Jackson Schultz (Jr., Millersville, Md.) earning second-place showings in the 100 and 200 breaststroke events.

Navy will open the home portion of its schedule Friday when it plays host to Towson and Johns Hopkins.
