Penn State Wraps Regular Season With Dominant Sweep of Villanova

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.- The Penn State Nittany Lions women’s swimming and diving team was victorious against the Villanova Wildcats today at McCoy Natatorium by a score of 179-98.

With the win, the Nittany Lions end their regular season 5-3 while also recognizing their seniors pre-meet with a very special senior day ceremony. Ellie BrandberghMary Brinker, Kenzie Clark, Abby HendersonCasey LoughlinMargaret MarkvardtAnna RedicanMorgan RinnKylie Rydland and Cat Stanford were all recognized for their commitment to the program over the past four years.

Top Swims

Morgan Jenny was dominant in the 1000 free for the Nittany Lions winning with almost six seconds to spare in an impressive time of 10:29.97.

Sophomore Catherine Meisner followed Jenny by winning the 200 free in a fast time of 1:49.81.

In the 100 back, Henderson and sophomore Carly Sebring finished first and second with fast times of 56.66 and 57.49.

Rinn celebrated her senior day winning the 200 fly in a time of 2:00.95.

The Nittany Lions took two of the top spots in the 50 free as junior Maura Fluehr finished first in a fast time of 24.18. She was followed by Brandbergh in third with a time of 24.27.

Meisner struck gold again in the 100 free finishing first in a time of 51.37. She was followed by fellow Nittany Lion junior Marly Lough who finished second with a time of 51.94.

In the 200 back Markvardt celebrated her senior day with a win in the 200 back finishing with a time of 2:04.34.

Rydland continued her strong evening of swimming, winning the 200 breast with a time of 2:23.69.

Sophomore Morgan Moore continued her great season in the distance swims winning the 500 free in a time of 5:04.35.

In the 100 fly, Fluehr got her second win of the day in the 100 fly finishing in 56.66.

The Nittany Lions got their first sweep of the day in the 400 IM. Meisner finished in the top spot with a time of 4:35.03, followed by Henderson at 4:24.42 and Rinn at 4:26.38.

Relays

The women’s team got the day started in style winning the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:46.54. The winning team was Brandbergh, Rydland, Markvardt and Stanford and they were followed by the second place team of Molly CarsonKalin WiltroutMaura Fluehr and Henderson who finished in 3:50.11.

In the 200 free relay, Brandbergh, Markvardt, Sebring and Stanford combined for yet another win in a fast time of 1:33.94

Dives

Freshman Kailey Koval continued her outstanding rookie season winning the one-meter dive with a score of 268.95.

In the three-meter dive, Koval shined again, winning with a score of 323.85 which was a personal record for her. Sophomore Charlize Beniquez took the second spot with a personal record of 307.58 and Clark finished third with a personal record of 269.18.

The Nittany Lions will travel to the Big Ten Championships in West Lafayette, Ind. to begin their postseason Feb 20-24.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.-  The Penn State Nittany Lions men’s swimming and diving team was victorious against the Villanova Wildcats today at McCoy Natatorium by a score of 224-74.

The men’s team was able to sweep six different events on the day which helped propel them to the win.

With the win, the Nittany Lions end their regular season 5-3 while also recognizing their seniors pre-meet with a very special senior day ceremony. Zach BrewerBen DoyleTommy HurleyJacob Oberle and Calvin Wise were all recognized for their commitment to the program over the past four years.

Top Swims

The Nittany Lions enjoyed a clean sweep of the 200 free but junior Victor Baganha emerged victorious in a time of 1:39.27. Eduardo Cisternas wasn’t far behind finishing second in a time of 1:39.47. Sophomore Mariano Lazzerini finished off the sweep in a time of 1:40.03.

In the 100 back, the Nittany Lions swept yet again this time with sophomore Cooper Morley in the top spot swimming to a time of 48.63. He was followed by junior Jack Harvey with a time of 49.18 and freshman Sean Honey with a time of 51.37.

Doyle celebrated his senior day with a win in the 100 breast in an impressive time of 57.18. Graduate senior Lachlan Byrne finished in the second spot with a time of 58.59.

Freshman Caden Davis got his evening started with a win in the 200 fly posting a blazing fast time of 1:53.13. Fellow freshman Alex Karahalis finished behind him with a time of 1:53.19.

The fourth sweep of the day came in the 50 free as freshman Tylor Kim beat teammates Hurley (21.12) and sophomore Justin Schneider (21.55) to win in a time of 20.72.

Yet another sweep was made by the Nittany Lions in the 100 free as junior Victor Bagnaha finished in the top spot with a time of 45.42 followed by Byrne who finished 46.35 and sophomore Ryan McNutt who finished in 47.19.

The final sweep of the day came in the 400 IM as sophomore Andrew Christiansen out swam his teammates Honey (4:02.09) and Karahalis (4:04.05) to take the win in an impressive time of 4:00.32.

Relays

The day got started with the 400 medley relay team of Morley, Lazzerini, Baganha and Kim putting on a dominating performance winning the event with time to spare. Their time of 3:14.99 was five seconds faster than the second place team of Matthew BittnerAlex KarahalisCaden Davis and Lachlan Byrne.

The 200 medley relay team took the top spot for the Nittany Lions to end the night.

Dives

Sophomore Hayden Elliott was just five points shy of his personal record in the three-meter dive as he was victorious with a score of 375.83. Sullivan finished second for the Nittany Lions with a score of 352.88.

Elliott continued his strong night winning the one-meter dive with a personal record of 392.48. Sullivan followed him with another personal record of 367.88.

The Nittany Lions will travel to the Big Ten Championships in West Lafayette, Ind. to begin their postseason Feb 20-24.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Villanova fell in its final road dual of the season on Friday afternoon against Penn State at the McCoy Natatorium. The women faced a 196-100 loss while the men fell 224-74. All-told, Villanova logged 31 top three finishes on the day.

Charlie Hinckley and Maggie Kleinsmith logged a pair of top three finishes that included winning swims for the ‘Cats. Hinckley was victorious in the 1000 free at 9:33.41 and clocked in at 1:55.50 in the men’s 200 back for third place. Kleinsmith touched first in the 100 breast at 1:04.72 and was second in a close 200 breast race at 2:24.76, just over a second out of first.

The women’s 400 Medley Relay A team of Audrey Pastorek, Kleinsmith, Arabella Lee and Lauryn Johnson turned in a third-place time of 3:51.79. Both the A and B teams finished in the top three of the 200 Free Relay. Johnson, Carlota Colomer, Alyssa McHale and Lainey Quinones were second (1:36.53) followed by Molly BensonMartina LonatiLexi Elkovitch and Cara Stapleton in third (1:39.61). The men’s A squad of Hinckley, Mikey ThurkHenry Gingrich and Sam Randall posted a third place showing in 1:25.54.

Hinckley led the charge in a 1-2-3 Villanova sweep in the men’s 1000 free. Patrick Casey placed second in 9:49.75 with Brady Tierney following him in third at 9:56.98. On the women’s side, Marlene Blanke was second with a time of 10:35.22.

Lainey Quinones turned in a second-place finish in the 200 free in 1:51.61, finishing just two seconds out of first. Later, she was second in the 50 Free at 24.22. Lee fell into a close race in the 100 back but was edged by Carly Sebring, finishing in third by .24 seconds at 57.73. She later finished ahead of Sebring in the 100 fly, logging a second-place time of 57.11.

Pastorek joined Kleinsmith in the top three of the 100 breast, touching third in 1:07.82. Less than a second separated second and fourth place in the men’s 100 breast. Wade Weston ended up finishing third (59.39), just getting past teammate Henry Halloran in fourth (59.85).

Katie White and Lauryn Johnson registered second (2:03.35) and third (2:04.77) finishes, respectively, in the women’s 200 fly. Justin Nowicki took third in the men’s 200 fly at 1:533.22 with Nolan Danus narrowly behind him in fourth at 1:53.56.

On the boards, Michelle Kasulka scored a 250.50 in the women’s 1 meter that was good enough for second. Chris Jones received a 314.78 score in the men’s 3 meter for third pace.

McHale posted a 52.43 time in the 100 free that landed her third, just over a second out of first. Pastorek and Peri Gaguzis went 2-3 in the 200 back, finishing in 2:05.96 and 2:09.84. Kathryn Montefusco finished in the top three of the 200 breast with Kleinsmith, posting a third-place time of 2:26.66. Weston and Hallord were 2-3 in the men’s 200 breast at 2:09.68 and 2:10.41.

The ‘Cats had a trio of top-three finishers in the 500 free. Lonati and Meghan Tiernan were second (5:07.55) and third (5:09.43) in the women’s while Casey was second (4:45.36) in the men’s.

Villanova wraps up the regular season on Saturday with Sprintfest. The day will start with a Senior Day ceremony at 10:45 a.m. before the meet at 11 a.m.
