Penn State’s Fittin, Rowe, Francis among last chance qualifiers at Princeton NCAA Qualifier

At the Princeton last chance NCAA Qualifier meet, Penn State’s Carolyn Fittin, Katie Rowe and Casey Francis each jumped into NCAA invite contention with big swims.

Fittin hit a season-best 22.27 in the 50 free to move from 33rd to 28th nationally. She probably would have made it in without this boost, but in a race like the 50, it only takes a few swimmers dropping a few tenths at various last chance meets to move you back in a hurry.

Her teammate Katie Rowe punched her likely ticket to NCAAs in the 200 fly, besting her season-best by a full 1.7 seconds with a 1:56.11. Rowe’s previous best had her way out of the qualifying range, but she now sits 25th, with somewhere around 39 swimmers likely getting in.

Other notable swims from the Princeton Qualifier:

  • Penn State’s Casey Francis dropped 9 full seconds in her mile to go 16:15.39, now ranked 33rd and probably in line for an NCAA invite.
  • Yale freshman Maddy Zimmerman will probably find herself right on the bubble for an NCAA bid after going 52.74 in the 100 fly. She sits 38th right now, and 39 swimmers were invited a year ago.
  • Rutgers’ Greta Leberfinger is in the same position in the 200 breaststroke, sitting 39th. She got there with a season-best 2:11.22 at the Princeton Qualifier.
