DAY 1

MALIBU, California – The Pepperdine women’s swim and dive program claimed seven first-place finishes in nine events en route to a 106-59 victory over Cal State East Bay in a swim-only dual meet at Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool on Friday afternoon.

MEET RECAP

To kick the meet off, Pepperdine’s 400 medley relay team of Kylie Taylor (Eugene, Ore./Churchill HS), Charli Sunahara (Chino, Calif./Ruben S. Ayala HS), Lexie Deitemeyer (Golden, Colo./Golden HS) and Alexandra Browne (Arlington, Va./Washington-Liberty HS) took first with a 3:57.12 showing. The Waves then started off the individual events strong as Lexi Haymart (El Dorado Hills, Calif./Ponderosa HS) took first in the 700 freestyle with a time of 7:27.43, which was 12 seconds clear of the second place finisher. In the 50 fly, Emma Purdy (Truckee, Calif./Truckee HS) crossed the finish line in 26.61 seconds. Sunahara continued her strong start to the season with a 30.36 performance in the 50 breast to net first place.

Pepperdine picked up where it left off following a short break, as the 800 free relay squad of Haymart, Lindsay Hemming (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte HS), AJ Adams (Castle Rock, Calif./Valor Christian HS) and Anna Ryan (Alamo, Calif./Monte Vista HS) earned a time of 7:47.44 to win the event. Soon after, Hemming won an individual event as well, taking the 50 back in 27.98. Sunahara claimed first in the 100 IM with a time of 1:00.74 for the Waves’ final individual win of the day.

Second-place finishes included Tay Thomas (Pleasant Hill, Calif./College Park HS) in the 50 back (28.52), Purdy in the 50 free (24.92) and Adams in the 100 IM (1:01.85).

QUOTABLE

Head coach Ellie Monobe said: “I was very impressed with our Waves today in a short sprint meet. East Bay has a very strong sprint program so it’s been nice to get a preview of what to expect in conference, especially in our relays. I thought our 800 free relay did a very stellar job compared to last weekend. Our 200 frees have been kind of a weak point for our program in the last year, so seeing that come together in the mid-distance free group has been very exciting. I thought Charli Sunahara had a phenomenal meet being able to throw down some fast times right now. Lindsay Hemming going 27.9 was the fastest split for our team right now, and after doing the relay right before was really exciting. We’re looking forward to seeing some more swimming tomorrow and some real events. Overall, we’re very pleased with the performance today.”
