Distance swimmer Peter Brothers committed to swim for the University of Calgary and head coach Mike Blondal next season as he gears up to compete at the 2016 short course World Championships in December.
Brothers finished second to Canadian distance star Ryan Cochrane in the 1500m freestyle at the 2016 Canadian Olympic Trials with a time of 15:21.19. He was just off the Olympic qualifying time of 15:14.77.
Brothers also placed second to Cochrane in the 400m freestyle with a time of 3:51.26.
Brothers is no stranger to international competition, having competed at both the 2014 Junior Pan Pacific Championships and the 2014 Youth Olympic Games.
His upcoming stint at the short course World Championships will be his first major swim as a senior international athlete.
Brothers’ talents will make him one of the top distance prospects in the CIS putting Calgary on the map. In recent years, UBC’s Keegan Zanatta has been the man to beat in the distance events, however with Brother’s talents it will add to the Calgary-UBC rivalry that already exists.
Blondal said of Brothers, “with Peter, we will have another world class prospect in our program, who can add quality to the training environment. He is a top Canadian recruit and we are looking forward to providing him with what he needs to succeed as a student and as an athlete.”
On the topic of his commitment Brothers said, “I am pleased to be representing the University of Calgary this coming fall. Being able to train with a strong men’s varsity team is going to be a new and exciting experience for me. Surrounding myself with people who have high goals in swimming and in academics will help motivate me in and out of the pool. I can’t wait to work with all the staff and open myself up to new opportunities at the University.”
Homecoming of sorts…
