Twenty-Three-Time Olympic Gold Medalist Michael Phelps, now affectionately referred to as the “G.O.A.T.,” has told the Baltimore Sun that his sixteen-week-old son, Boomer Robert Phelps, will be a Michigan Wolverine. Phelps proclaimed, “Boomer’s going to Michigan. Go Blue.” Like father, like son. Phelps followed Coach Bob Bowman to the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, after the 2004 Olympic Games. Bowman replaced Jon Urbanchek as Michigan’s head coach and served in the head coaching position from 2006 to 2008. Phelps, who had already turned professional, could not compete collegiately but did swim for Club Wolverine. Michigan also lists Phelps as a volunteer coach from 2005 to 2008. Phelps took classes at Michigan but did not pursue a degree. After the 2008 Olympic Games, Phelps followed Bowman back to Baltimore when Bowman re-took the helm of the North Baltimore Aquatic Club. Arizona State University has recently challenged Michigan’s sole claim to Phelps.
Notably, Nicole Johnson, Boomer’s mom and Phelps’ fiancée, who did not get to offer her two-cents, is a University of Southern California (“USC”) alumna. She also holds the Miss California 2010 title. Phelps, Johnson, and Boomer live closer to Johnson’s alma mater in Scottsdale, Arizona, so Phelps better hope Boomer doesn’t get too attached to the warmer weather. Phelps will be an assistant swim coach at Arizona State under Bowman.
Perhaps the more stimulating discussion is which university, Michigan or USC, has historically performed better at the NCAA Division I Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships? Below is a table that shows each respective university’s finish at the championships for the past five years. We’ll let the results speak for themselves:
Year | Michigan | USC |
2011 | 9th | 7th |
2012 | 5th | 7th |
2013 | 1st | 4th |
2014 | 4th | 8th |
2015 | 3rd | 4th |
2016 | 12th | 13th |
We would be remiss not to mention that Michigan also won the national championship in 1937-1941, 1948, 1957-1959, 1961, and 1995 (12 total championships), and USC won the national championship in 1960, 1963-1966, and from 1974-1977 (9 total championships). Here is the complete list of men’s swimming national championship winners. Michigan is tied for the most men’s team titles with the University of Texas.
In addition to finding out where Boomer goes to college (and if he swims at all), we will also have to wait and see how fast the Arizona State University swim team climbs the rankings under the leadership of Bowman and Phelps.
Not a great recruiting ploy for an ASU assistant coach…..
They should have used Boomer on the relays in Rio
Huge mistake, this will definitely ruin Boomer’s swimming career. He should go pro and capitalize on the money while he can. Training yards is going to majorly impact his Olympic chances. Can’t believe Phelps is ruining his son’s life like this.
Can we get a side by side comparison of academic national rankings?
Umm shouldn’t boomer have a say in about 17 years about where HE wants to go school at?? I love phelps but let your kid decide where he wants to go to college.
Can’t upvote this comment enough.
I won’t up vote it because the ACTUAL comment wasn’t meant that way.
Choice is good. Would upvote this comment all day.
Can’t believe people are actually down voting the notion that people should have a choice in what they do in their OWN life. They actuall think a person shouldn’t have a choice on what they do with their life? Some people are pathetic like that.
Ummmm Please see the interview. It was stated in a kidding fashion and not to imply that he is forcing his kid to do something.
It was a lighthearted interview. Michigan is a great school and Ann Arbor is a cool town. The not so joking matter is he talked about lacrosse, the one sport that basically screams ‘I’m an entitled d’bag, you ok with that?’
Lacrosse is so big in Maryland. Be careful, Swimming’s recent track record is “screaming” much louder: Lochte and the other gas station swimmers, Brock Turner?
All of that pales in comparison to Duke lacrosse
Check your facts. All charges were dropped by NC AG and prosecuter in the case was disbarred for misconduct.
If you believe that those (filthy rich) lacrosse players did nothing wrong because their charges were dropped then I have some ocean front property in Wyoming you might be interested in
What are you talking about. I don’t know where you live but lacrosse is a popular sport in the northeast no matter who you are.
“Boomer”???
I think Dr Dave Salo will offer him a full ride right now! Fight On Trojans!! ????
