Phoenix Swim Club’s Miriam Sheehan Breaks NAG Record in 100 Meter Backstroke

Miriam Sheehan of the Phoenix Swim Club has broke the USA Swimming National Age Group Record in the 10 & under 100 long course meter backstroke, swimming 1:09.36 on Sunday at the Arizona Long Course Open.

That swim broke the old record of 1:09.96 that was set by Elizabeth Beisel in 2003, leaving the Olympic medalist with justΒ one standing 10 & under National Age Group Record (in the 200 IM). Beisel had four just a few weeks ago, before Sheehan and Claire Tuggle (a Californian) started to shred her marks this summer.

This is the second record-breaking performance of the weekend for Sheehan, who also broke the 50 fly record on Friday.

Sheehan also holds the National Age Group Record in the 50 meter backstroke in long course.

The totality of her swims from the weekend:

  • 50 back – 32.65
  • 100 back – 1:09.36
  • 50 fly – 30.13
  • 100 fly – 1:09.07
  • 100 free – 1:04.46
  • 100 breast – 1:26.64
  • 200 IM – 2:39.03
  • 200 free – 2:24.25

Sheehan’s swim in the 100 backstroke would’ve won the Olympic gold medal as recently as 1956, and would’ve made every Olympic final through 1968.

Sheehan doesn’t age up until September of this year.

But you know, I’m not so proud of my comment in the Claire Tuggle’s article. That comparison is so stupid! πŸ˜† It’s clearly the last time I write that kind of idiot things. Even if it was obviously not serious. πŸ˜‰

Back to Miss Sheehan. Aging up only next September, she’s gonna put these back and fly NAG records at a very very very high level. Impressive!
That 10 and under generation of US girls is really amazing.
Beisel held 4 LCM NAG records in that age category before this season (200 free/400 free/100… Read more Β»
