Polish Championships Day 3: Kawęcki Hits FINA A In 200 Back With A 1:57.07

2021 POLISH SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS

On day 3 of the 2021 Polish Swimming Championships, Radoslaw Kawęcki seems to have become the most recent addition to Poland’s 2021 Olympic squad with his 1:57.07 victory in the 200 backstroke. That swim was just under the FINA A standard in the event of 1:57.50 but was short of his PB and Polish record in the event of 1:54.24 which he set back in 2013. Jakub Skierka was within inches of the cut as he touched in second place with a 1:57.97, followed by Mikołaj Malec‘s 2:00.04 for bronze.

On the women’s side, Polish champion Laura Bernat managed to pick up a gold medal but had a little bit less on the line, having already qualified for the Olympic team earlier this year. Her winning swim of 2:11.45 was over the FINA A standard of 2:10.39, as well as her season-best of 2:09.81 which she swam back in March.

Klaudia Naziębło hit a 2:12.33 to earn silver while Paulina Peda was right behind for bronze in a 2:12.62.

In the men’s 400 freestyle Wojciech Wojdak managed to defend his 2019 Polish title by swimming a 3:51.65 for the win. Despite swimming fast enough to take gold in the event, Wojdak was a little bit slower than his 3:46.67 PB in the event as well as the FINA A standard which sits at a 3:46.78. Behind Wojdak, a battle broke out for the silver medal as Filip Zaborowski and Bartłomiej Koziejko were separated by only 0.14 seconds with Zaborowski hitting a 3:54.25 for second place and Koziejko a 3:54.39 for third.

On the women’s side of the 400 freestyle, top seeding heading into the event Aleksandra Polańska was unable to pull off the victory and defend ur 2019 Polish title in the event and wound up falling to 4th place in the final with a 4:19.47. That swim was quicker than her 4:22.99 prelim swim but not enough to hold off the likes of Klaudia Tarasiewicz (4:15.39), Aleksandra Knop (4:16.08), or Paulina Piechota (4:17.58) who took gold, silver, and bronze, respectively.

That swim for Tarasiewicz was a PB, improving upon her previous mark of 4:19.46 whole Knop and Piechota were both a little bit off their respective best times of 4:14.46 and 4:15.90.

National record holder Konrad Czerniak managed to pull off the win in the men’s 50 butterfly with a 23.45 to get within half a second of his 23.07 NR while Marcin Cieślak followed in a 23.72 and Michał Chudy was a 23.78 for third. As for the women, it was also the national record holder who won the A final, and Anna Dowgiert notched a 26.34 for the win, just over her mark of 25.91 from 2015. Kornelia Fiedkiewicz took silver in a 26.83 while Joanna Światek hit a 27.02 for bronze.

In the mixed 4×100 freestyle relay, the contingent of Jakub Majerski (50.30), Paulina Nogaj (56.67), Piotr Ludwiczak (50.44), and Dominika Kossakowska (56.68) posted the top time of the evening with a 3:33.09.
