Baltimore, Md. – Senior Illia Rattsev (Moscow, Russia) was a part of three of the four pool records that fell as the UMBC Men’s Swimming & Diving Team defeated Howard on Saturday afternoon at UMBC Aquatic Complex.
The Retrievers dominated, taking first in 12 of the 14 swimming events, and sweeping both diving events, en route to the 135-129 victory.
Rattsev was a member of both the record-setting 400 Medley Relay and the 800 Free Relay. In addition, his leg of 1:39.62 in the 800 Free Relay broke the pool record of 1:39.75 for fastest 200 Free previously set in 2006. Rattsev teamed in that relay with Satori Dobbie (Christchurch, New Zealand) Gabe Laracuente (Gaithersburg, Md.) and Niklas Weigelt (Clayton, Calif.) to win the race in 6:44.84 and shatter the previous record of 6:51.48 set in 1991 by Drexel.
The 400 Medley Relay team of Dobbie, Rattsev, Garrett Wlochowski (Manchester, Conn.), and Luis Galvan (Torreon, Mexico) won its heat in a pool record time of 3:21.64, besting the previous record 3:22.35 set just last year.
“Our team was quite tired coming off the team training trip, and they stepped up. We broke every possible pool record we could do today, and kind of beat our expectations, especially in the 400 Medley,” said Head Coach Chad Cradock. “We got off the plane yesterday morning, came over [to the pool], trained, and they got here today and were preforming at our best this season. We’re excited for the last two dual meets that head into championships.”
Junior Kai Wisner (Syracuse, N.Y.) also broke a pool record, winning the 1650 Free in 15:40.37 to break the previous record of 15:48.95 set in 1998.
“Kai is a very focused individual. He comes in every day and is driven, and when he leaves our training site and goes home for the Holiday break, he’s training. He’s extremely tough, and we knew that Kai had this opportunity to break the mile record because he was so close to it in practice, and now he’s able to pretty much break it pretty solidly. I think this builds on the confidence,” said Cradock. “For Illia, this 200 Free we’ve been trying to break for a long time. Having [so many] great swimmers, including Illia trying to break this record year after year, and he was finally able to break through and do it, and he’s been swimming extremely well.”
UMBC took the top four spots in the 200 Free, with Matthew Bennici (Walkersville, Md.)(1:43.52) winning, followed by Connor Robison (Wallingford, Conn.) (1:47.35), Chris Welsh (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) (1:47.37) and Ryan Lawson (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) (1:50.18). The Retrievers then swept the top three spots in the 50 Back with Wlochowski (23.41) winning, Luka Zurich (Setauket, N.Y.) (24.93) coming in second and Sebastian Chang (Boyds, Md.) (25.80) taking third.
Jack Carlisle (Cape Town, South Africa) narrowly won the 50 yard Breast, touching at 27.65, just one one-hundredth of a second in front of Howard’s Miguel Davis (27.66). Tiago Asakawa (Sumare, Brazil) won the 100 Fly in a time of 51.18, while Rattsev took first in the 100 Free in a time of 46.73.
On the diving side, Ben Parker (Lawrenceville, Ga.) and Will Henrickson (Ellicott City, Md.) went first and second in both the 1 Meter and 3 Meter events. Parker won the 1 Meter with a score of 249.15, and took the crown in the 3 Meter after earning a 279.60. Henrickson took second in both events after he finished with scores of 241.05 and 217.65, respectively.
Wlowchowski won the 100 Back in a time of 50.29, while Bennici (4:37.10), Welsh (4:54.94) and Diego Morales (North Potomac, Md.) (4:58.33) took the top three spots in the 500 Free. Asakawa (22.77), Mac Hoskins (Columbia, Md.) (24.07) and Zacharias Pavlou (Larnaca, Cyprus) (24.09) gave the Retrievers another 1-2-3 finish in the 50 Fly.
UMBC finished up the individual events by taking the top four spots in the 200 Individual Medley. Jackson Wolter (Clarksville, Md.) won the event in a time of 2:00.20, touching just before teammate Michael Dressler (Brunswick, Md.) who finished at 2:00.31. Jeremy Gates (Escondido, Calif.) took third in a time of 2:03.30, while Lawson rounded out the top four in 2:07.77.
The Retrievers return to the pool on January 18 when they head to Fairfax, Va. for a dual meet at George Mason.
BALTIMORE – The UMBC women’s swimming and diving squads finished first in every event and recorded a 134-120 victory over visiting Howard at the UMBC Aquatic Center.
The Retrievers competed against the Bison 24 hours after returning from their winter training trip in Florida.
“We want to thank Howard University for the opportunity to swim different events,” said head coach Chad Cradock. “Our team is quite tired, coming off the training trip, but they stepped up. We’re excited for our last two dual meets heading into the championships.”
Three Retrievers each posted a pair of wins. In the pool, freshman Makayla Ludwick (Gulf Breeze, Fla.) won the 100 (55.74) and 200 (1:58.10) yard freestyle events, and senior Emily Vance (Finksburg, Md./Westminster) captured the 50 (27.9) and 100 (1:00.08) backstroke events. Sophomore Tonia Papapertrou (Nicosia, Cyprus) captured the 50 freestyle (24.83) and swam the anchor leg of the concluding 800 yard freestyle relay. The Retrievers cruised in that event, posting a time of 7:54.91.
“The training trip and coming here afterward was so hard, but I felt we did so well” said Papapertrou. “Everyone’s attitude was so positive and everyone was supporting their teammates, so that was great.”
“Tonia was very strong (today), she had a tremendous training trip as well,” said Cradock. “She’s now being rewarded for her hard work.”
