February 24th, 2015 Club, News

In it’s inaugural year, the Big 10 Stampede will be bringing together 10 of the nation’s top senior swimming programs to compete in a meet specifically designed to offer incredible top end competition, but also the “team” environment that will lead to some fun competition. Between February 26th and March 1st, roughly 500 swimmers from these 10 programs, 7 of which have been Silver level programs or higher, will compete in a short course prelims and long course finals format.

The meet will be hosted by Lakeside Aquatic Club and help in the beautiful new facility, Lewisville ISD Westside Aquatic Center. This competition will no doubt provide excellent opportunities for the national level swimmers to compete against each other and result in some great swimming, but will also offer an opportunity, in the same meet, for those developing senior and national level swimmers to earn spots in finals and post new cuts before the summer season officially begins.

Led by Coach Walter and Coach Bauer (from The Woodlands Swim Team), these ten coaches have been looking for a competition like this in early March for a while, and have now decided to create their own opportunity for fast swimming. Keep an eye out for some fast swimming to be coming out of Texas that weekend.

Details:

Location:
Lewisville ISD Westside Aquatic Center
1750 Duncan Lane
Lewisville, Texas 75028

Teams:
Lakeside Aquatic Club, The Woodlands Swim Team, Loveland Swim Club, Rose Bowl Aquatics, Irvine Novaquatics, Sandpipers of Nevada, Colorado Springs Swim Team, Tampa Bay Aquatics, Rancho San Diego Dieguito, and North Texas Nadadores.

When:
Feb 26th – Mar 1st
3 1/2 day format, beginning Thursday afternoon with distance and relay

Is there going to be a summary news article update on the Texas Big 10 Stampede Meet? Is there any link on the results for this meet?

I’m guessing none of these teams would have agreed to it if didn’t mesh with or improve their schedule. Sectionals is not really a “sectional” meet anyway, since swimmers from all over the country come to Texas for the “sectional” meet.

Agreed. When 4 of the top 5 teams are from out of state it is disappointing for those kids from TX and LA who worked so hard to make it to Sectionals.

I would not assume that “none of these teams would agree with it if it did not mesh with their schedule”. My point is that these decisions are often made by USA swimming coaches, who do not always think about the schoolwork. Our club team used to have kids swim a prep school or high school series of championship meets (first local, then state based on team size, then full state meet over about 2 wks), then there was a 3 1/2 day LSC age group meet, followed by a 3 1/2 day Senior LSC meet, followed by a 4 day sectional meet for those who qualified, followed by Mesa and that ALL of these meets took place from mid… Read more »

This is the end of the year meet for CO teams. Girls HS swimming ended a few weeks ago and boys has not started. Senior State is held at over 5000ft, so many do not attend. We attend one end of the year meet for our Senior swimmers, always outside of CO.

This meet has no time standards, 4 heats of finals, good timelines, and great competition in a nice facility. That is a fantastic opportunity. And it does not create a situation anything like you presented, George.

The Texas state high school meets were last weekend. The 3 Texas teams will forego the Sectionals meet that happens on the same weekend, along with three out-of-state teams that went last year. Four of the top 8 teams from last year’s Sectionals will be going to Big 10. Sad that it will dilute the talent at Sectionals, but it’s no secret in these parts that LAC wasn’t happy with that meet last year. Additionally, the time standards at this meet will be easier than Sectionals, thus allowing more swimmers to participate.

Sounds like a great meet for those swimmers lucky enough to be able to swim on one of these powerhouse teams. However, don’t these kids have to go to school??? It is boys high school championship season, boys and girls prep school championship season, plus there are USA swimming Age Group and Senior LSC Championship meets and Sectional meets, not to mention Mesa Grand Prix coming up. That means missing a lot of school already and to add another (expensive) travel meet that will take the kids out of school for the good part of a week and away from their homework seems potentially problematic. This is coming from a former parent who found that each trials/finals 3-4 day travel… Read more »

Not everyone lives in your state, George. The CA teams aren’t in their HS seasons, and not all these teams will travel to all the meets you suggest they’d also be going to. I’d imagine for a couple of them it replaces one or more of those.

Kudos to these coaches and programs are coming together for what looks to be an exceptional opportunity for everyone involved. SWIM FAST!
