Practice + Pancakes: Texas Women Tackle ‘Fast Friday’ (Video)

SwimSwam wants to give you an inside look at what a normal day-in-the-life looks like for any given swimmer, and how that differs from team to team or city to city. We send our head of production, Coleman Hodges, to be a fly on the wall at practice, then relay what he discovered back to you over pancakes. Or at least breakfast.

I went to visit the UT women in Austin, and was lucky enough to sit in on one of their practices. Not just any practice, though.

On Fridays, UT Women go fast.

They had 3 different groups going: Sprint, Mid, and Distance.

Middle distance went: 3x broken 200 (125, :20 rest, 75) then 3x broken 125 (75, :20 rest, 50)

Distance went: 3x 300, 1x 200, 1x 100

All off the blocks. They were intense, focused, and fought the whole time. And as Carol mentions at the end of the video, you could tell they were starting to get into their groove towards the middle of the set, and started cheering and making the pool deck a little more lively for each other. It was a fun environment to be a part of.

Why is Madisyn training with the college group? I thought that was not allowed?

I wonder if Capitani is considering switching Adams to the 200 IM on day 1 instead of the 50 free? There might be more potential points for her there rather than the 50 free. It could also make sense for Adams to do five relays rather than a third individual event.

They have plenty of freestylers. They’re gonna give Adams a third event since she can score big vs. a few point difference in what she’d add to a relay as a freestyler).

They don’t actually have that many sprint freestylers, though they have plenty of middle distance. Last year they had Karosas on both sprint relays and she’s not really a sprinter. The 200 IM is very tight right now and will probably be harder to score in than the 50 free since more seniors graduated from the 50 free. Since neither event is really Adam’s strong suit, (her best freestyle event is the 200 free, which conflicts with backstroke) I think she will swim 5 relays. If they do decide to take her out of one though, it will be the 200 FR.

@Hannah there’s 7 girls whose only designation on the Texas roster that says “freestyle” and no other stroke (texassports.com). Just saying!

To my previous comment – she will do 1back, 2back, 2IM, 400 MR, and 800FR. I see your point that they’d be weak without her 100 free split in the 400 FR, but they’d survive.

The women won their tri-meet this past weekend. The same cannot be said for the men, so maybe you should follow the women more closely.

Then guys have won NCAAs the last 3 years, the girls have not. The men’s team doesn’t put an emphasis on dual meets which is probably why they do so well at the end of the year.

they have great girls on that Team – maybe still too much overshadowed by what the Men do .

The Texas Women’s Team is a team on the rise. It’s difficult to build a new culture of success, and I for one am excited to see how they’re doing it.

This was a COLLEGE team’s practice. There are no “girls” in college. If you’re going to choose to publicize your mysogynistic thoughts, at least be “man” enough to get your terminology correct…and consider attaching your real name to your post.

About Coleman Hodges

Coleman Hodges

Coleman started his journey in the water at age 1, and although he actually has no memory of that, something must have stuck. A Missouri native, he joined the Columbia Swim Club at age 9, where he is still remembered for his stylish dragon swim trunks. After giving up on …
