The 2016 Big Al Invitational is underway, with 2 days of the Princeton-hosted invite now in the books. Ivy League champion Corey Okubo swept the IM races through the first 2 sessions. On day 1, he won the 200 IM, clocking a 1:51.87 to finish a second ahead of teammate Tyler Lin (1:52.87). The 400 IM came on day 2, with Okubo getting to the wall first in 3:59.54 to give him the only aub-4:00 of the field. Lin picked up another 2nd place finish there, swimming to a 4:05.61.

Sophomore Cole Buese and freshman Derek Cox had an impressive day 2 showing for Princeton. Cox picked up 2 victories that session, clocking a 56.98 to win the 100 breast. He also finished just ahead of the Buese in the 100 fly, as they swam to a Tiger 1-2 with Cox’s 49.42 and Buese’s 49.73. Buese won the 200 free with the only sub-1:40, clocking a 1:39.29. He was also the 500 free champ on day 1 with his 4:31.09.

UConn freshman William Kearsey swam to a 100 back victory to stop the Princeton sweep. Kearsey broke ahead on the 2nd 50, surging to the wall in 50.22 for the win.

On the women’s side, Princeton freshmen Christie Chong and Gianna Garcia impressed for the Tigers. Garcia had a successful double on day 2, taking victories in the 100 fly (56.02) and 100 back. Chong, on the other hand, won the 200 IM (2:04.24) on day 1. In the 100 back, the freshman duo swam to a 1-2 finish, with Garcia clocking a 55.58 ahead of Chong’s 56.63.

Chong also picked up a silver in the 100 breast, where she clocked a 1:06.31 for 2nd. Winning that race was freshman teammate Shaelyn Choi, who charged to victory in 1:05.54.

Lehigh’s Kaitlyn Ruffing led a 1-2 finish for her team in the 50 free, clocking a 23.53 to get to the wall first. Just a fingernail behind her was freshman teammate Payton Miles in 23.56, who touched out Princeton’s Madelyn Veith (23.61) for 2nd.
