Princeton Lands Verbal from Multi-Olympic Trials Qualifier, NBAC’s Cole Buese

Cole Buese, a senior at Loyola Blakefield in Baltimore, Maryland, has made a verbal commitment to the application process* for the Princeton University class of 2019.

Buese swims at North Baltimore Aquatic Club and is a2016 Olympic Trials qualifier in the 200 fly, 200 back, and 400 free, all three of which he achieved at Junior Nationals in Irvine last summer. Buese’s best finish at Juniors was a fifth in the 200 fly, but he also finaled in the 400 free (18th), 200 back (13th), and 100 fly (22nd).

Buese’s top times include:

200y free: 1:39.48 200m free: 1:53.27
500y free: 4:27.39 400m free: 3:57.74
100y back: 50.47 100m back: 58.86
200y back: 1:49.56 200m back: 2:03.42
100y fly: 48.55 100m fly: 55.47
200y fly: 1:48.37 200m fly: 2:00.20
200y IM: 1:48.54 200m IM: 2:06.89
400y IM: 3:52.80 400m IM: 4:31.43

Over the last two MIAA high school seasons Buese has garnered four individual titles for Loyola Blakefield: 200 free (twice), 50 free, and 100 back. He spent his freshman season at Saint Xavier High School in Louisville, Kentucky, where he was state champion in the 200 free and 100 fly.

Most of Buese’s short course yards times as a junior would have landed him squarely in the middle of their respective B-finals at 2014 Ivy League Championships. But he had some big swims in long course season that could be quite helpful to the Tigers: notably, an 8-second drop in the 400 LCM free.

Princeton tends to hold its own in the 200 back, 200 fly and IMs, yet could really use the points in the 500 and 200 freestyle races. Buese is clearly versatile enough to move into whatever slots Princeton needs filling.

*DISCLAIMER: Buese has not yet been officially accepted to Princeton. As is true with all Ivy League schools, Princeton’s Admission Office will not send its acceptance letter until the beginning of December, along with those of all Early Action candidates. The procedure for a recruited athlete like Buese is for Admissions to review his transcript and SAT scores, “support (his) application for admission in the fall,” issue a Likely Letter, then offer him acceptance into the class of 2019.
