The Princeton men’s swimming and diving team continued to build on their success in the second session of the annual Harvard-Yale-Princeton (HYP) double dual meet on Saturday at DeNunzio Pool in Princeton. Having jumped out to an early lead, the Tigers shut down their rivals with six wins out of eight events on Saturday.
Princeton’s 200 medley relay (Andrew Helber 22.22, Jack Pohlman 24.27, Ben Schafer 21.16, and Sandy Bole 19.54) edged Harvard’s Steven Tan, Sebastian Lutz, Max Yakubovich, and Paul O’Hara, 1:27.19 to 1:27.41. Princeton’s B relay (Alexander Lewis, Byron Sanborn, Teo D’Alessandro, and Julian Mackrel) placed third. Yale’s Shawn Nee, Alex Gross, Scott Bole, and Victor Zhang took fifth.
Sam Smiddy of Princeton avenged his earlier second-place finish to Yale’s Kei Hyogo in the 1650 with a narrow win in the 400 IM: Smiddy touched in 3:52.64 to Hyogo’s 3:52.91. Princeton freshman Tyler Lin took third in 3:56.16, just .15 ahead of Yale’s Brian Hogan (3:56.31).
After his 100 back and 50 free victories on Friday night, Princeton junior En-wei Hu-Van Wright made it a hat trick with a win in the 100 free (43.47). Teammate Sandy Bole went 44.03 for second, while Paul O’Hara of Harvard went 44.50 for third. Yale’s Victor Zhang was 45.60 for the Bulldogs’ top performer.
Princeton senior Helber crushed the 200 back, with a lifetime-best 1:43.66. Freshman teammate Cole Buese went 1:44.43 for second. Harvard’s Koya Osada was third in 1:46.34, and Nee of Yale led the Bulldogs’ effort with 1:48.60.
Ben Schafer of Princeton went 47.59 to take the 100 fly title ahead of Harvard’s Yakubovich and Tan. D’Alessandro was fourth, while Yu-Bin Kim of Yale (49.47) was the Bulldogs’ top scorer.
Harvard’s Jack Boyd claimed the 500 free title with a 4:24.00 finish. McQuit (4:24.79) and Smiddy (4:26.46) followed, while Aly Abdel Khalik of Harvard (4:26.55) edged Yale’s Hyogo (4:26.69) for fourth.
Princeton’s Brett Usinger won the final individual event with a 1:57.95 in the 200 breast. Teammate Jack Pohlmann was second in 1:59.7, ahead of Harvard’s Shane McNamara (1:59.59) and Princeton’s Byron Sanborn (1:59.60). Kendrick McDonald of Yale came in sixth with 2:01.58.
Harvard closed the meet with a 1:57.24 victory in the 400 free relay from Paul O’Hara (44.69), Ed Kim (44.54), Yakubovich (44.13), and Lutz (43.88). Yale’s Scott Bole, Victor Zhang, Adrian Lin, and Brian Hogan placed second. Princeton exhibitioned the event with Hu-Van Wright, Julian Mackrel, Schafer, and D’Alessandro (1:55.05).
