Note: these rosters are still very much in flux. As swimmers make the World Championship teams in other events, they’ll be bumped from the World University Games Team. If WUGs swimmers make the Junior Worlds team later in the week (or vice versa), they’ll have to enter one or the other, as the dates conflict. There’s no specific word in USA Swimming’s selection procedures as to which meet takes priority, so it’s hard to predict whether the decision will come down to individual swimmers or whether one meet will supplant the other. On top of all that, many swimmers decline invitations to compete at these meets, particularly Junior Worlds swimmers, who may have commitments to school or other activities.
With all that said, consider this a tentative early look at the top qualifiers for the secondary international meets. It’s also certainly possible we overlooked someone with World University Games eligibility, as we don’t have perfect information on who is enrolled in some sort of collegiate academic program (whether in-person or online) and who isn’t. If you think we missed someone, please respectfully let us know in the comment section and we’ll do our best to confirm the information.
You can find full selection procedures for each meet here.
The current World Championships team after day 1 of Nationals is here.
Key points:
- Swimmers who make Worlds individually can’t do WUGs. They can still do Junior Worlds.
- Swimmers who make Worlds as relay-only swimmers can still do WUGs individually.
- WUGs are for swimmers enrolled in college as of Spring 2017 or Fall 2017
- Junior Worlds are for girls born in 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003 and boys born in 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2002.
- World University Games rosters are smaller: 20 men and 20 women, as opposed to 26 each for Worlds and Junior Worlds. As such, only the top 3 make it in each relay event. The rest of the relay spots (and the non-Olympic events) are filled by swimmers already on the team.

Wouldn’t THE NEXT top 6 “non” world team members in 100 free make up WUG relays?
ACC fan – not necessarily. Relay-only swimmers at Worlds can swim individual and relay events at WUGs. The last cycle there were a number of swimmers in that boat.
I know World Champs team requires you swim in the A Final at Trials.
Are B/C Final swimmers eligible for WUGs and Jr Worlds?
Yes.
Thanks – so the door is still open for a great time in the 200 free B final.
Yes. I interpret the selection criteria that a slower time in the B final is still better than a faster time in the C final. No? The WUGS selection criteria is silent on this but I couldn’t imagine this not being the case.
Yeah, for Junior Worlds, the criteria specifically note that A final swims get priority, then B finals, then C finals, then prelim times. World University Games doesn’t have that criteria, but since it calls for “highest eligible finishers”, it seems implied that A finals get priority, followed by B’s and C’s.
Why are Hali Flickinger and Dakota Luther not in for 1 & 2 World positions for the 200 Fly? Did they scratch out? Confused?
Confusing – this is the World University Games. You’re thinking World Championships.
what are the dates of the World Juniors?
Junior Worlds are from August 23-28
It is my understanding that top 4 finishes in the 100 and 200 free guarantee selection to the worlds team. If that is true, shouldn’t Lia Neel, Kelsi Worrell, Townley Haas, and Zach Apple be ineligible for WUGS?
WaitAMinute – relay only swimmers at Worlds are allowed to swim at WUGs as well. Worrell and Haas are likely to make Worlds individually later this week, but for now, they would be eligible for WUGs as relay-only Worlds swimmers.
Thank you for clarifying for me!!
Is Worrell still in college
No. She has been out a year.
Why does USA swimming not make the kids choose one or the other? If a kid would rather swim individually at WUGs than relay only at Worlds, it would seem logical to me to allow it but fill the swimmers Worlds slot with the next eligible swimmer.
I don’t feel like going to both should be allowed.
