Providence Men, Maine Women Victorious in Saturday Matchup

ORONO, MainePhilAnn Dixon set a new school-record in the 1-meter dive as the University of Maine swimming and diving team defeated Providence, 152-147, on Saturday afternoon.

Dixon’s record-setting mark checked in at 265.88, good for first place. Dixon went on to sweep the diving events, capturing first in the 3-meter dive at 227.93.

In all, the Black Bears tallied a pair of relay victories and five individual first place tallies.

Juliana McDonald continued her strong performances of late in the freestyle events, taking first place in both the 50-yard (23.68) and 100-yard free races (51.78).

Sabrina Nuttall had an impressive showing in the breaststroke competitions. Nuttall won the 100-yard event in 1:08.87 and was the runner-up in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:34.56.

Shayla-Rose Kleisinger had a solid performance in the distance events for the Black Bears where she captured first place in the 1000-yard freestyle with a final time of 10:55.08. Kleisinger placed third in the 500-yard free at 5:20.85 and tacked on a third place finish in the 200-yard IM (2:17.35).

Ines Khiyara rounded up the victories for Maine, taking first in the 200-yard breaststroke at 2:29.68. Khiyara took the bronze medal in the 200-yard free with a final mark of 2:00.24.

Caroline Stolic was the runner-up in the 200-yard IM at 2:15.66 and added a pair of third place finishes in the 100-yard backstroke (1:02.29) and 200-yard back event (2:14.34).

Four other Black Bears tallied runner-up finishes: Beatrix Lavigueur in the 1000-yard freestyle (11:03.78); Megan McGillivray in the 100-yard backstroke (1:02.28); Emma Blair in the 50-yard freestyle (24.79) and Rita Chen in the 100-yard butterfly (1:00.45).

Maine was able to sweep the relay events at Wallace Pool on Saturday. The team of Stolic, Nuttall, Chen and McDonald set the pace in the 200-yard medley with a winning time of 1:49.04. McDonald, Blair, Nuttall and Chen captured first place in the 200-yard freestyle relay, touching the wall at 1:37.69.

The University of Maine men’s swimming and diving team dropped its home meet to Providence by a score of 180-108 on Saturday afternoon. The Black Bears captured four individual wins and a relay victory against the Friars.

Andy Sprague and Coulter Morrill led the Black Bears’ efforts, each capturing a win and a runner-up finish. Sprague won the 50-yard freestyle event at 21.84 and placed second in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 53.39. Morrill touched the wall first in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:01.26 and was the runner-up in the 200-yard breaststroke at 2:14.85.

Ben Sturgis swept the diving events, placing first in the 1-meter with a score of 208.35 and a first-place mark of 223.13 on the board in the 3-meter event.

Conor Hughes tallied a pair of third-place finishes in the distance events, touching the wall in 10:17.92 in the 1000-yard freestyle while adding a time of 4:57.86 in the 500-yard free.

Dalton Sousa also garnered two bronze finishes. Sousa was third in the 200-yard backstroke at 2:02.68 and also placed third in the 200-yard IM at 2:01.02.

Kevin Kane was the runner-up in the 200-yard fly at 2:01.15 while Cameron Kubik added a second place showing in the 100-yard freestyle at 49.00.

Kubik, Morrill, Sprague and Jacob Ketch teamed up to win the 200-yard freestyle with a final time of 1:28.46. The team of Sprague, Ketch, Hayden Kasavicha and Kazy Temple combined to place second in the 200-yard medley relay at 1:38.49.

Maine returns to action on when it travels to Worcester, Mass. for the four-day America East Championships, beginning on Thursday, Feb. 14.

Orono, Maine – The Providence College Friars traveled to Maine on Saturday, January 26 to face the University of Maine Black Bears. The Friars and the Black Bears split the meet with a win for the Friar men and a loss for the Friar women.
