Last Friday, Purdue played host to one of the top Division II programs in the country, the University of Indianapolis. Entering the season, the Greyhound men were picked as the top team in Division II while the women’s program sits in third in the latest CSCAA poll. Purdue meanwhile is entering it’s first season under new head coach Alex Jerden, who took over the program after over three decades under previous head coach Dan Ross.

Women’s Meet Recap

The Boilermaker women were dominant across the meet, claiming the title in every event throughout the meet. The program opened the day by claiming the top two spots in the 200 medley relay, with Ana Rojas, Masy Folcik, Maggie Love, and Hannah Hill combining to take the top spot in 1:43.50. Hill, Rojas, and Love were later joined by Kendra Bowen to finish the meet with a second top finish in the 200 free relay (1:35.03).

Bowen also was an individual event winner, claiming the top spot in the 100 free at 52.59.

In her lone race of the day, Kate Beavon cruised to a seven second win in the 1000 free over teammate Abby Jahns. Beavon finished with a time of 10:17.69.

The first multiple event winner of the day came in the middle distance freestyle events, with freshman Caitlin Hurley taking the top spot in both the 200 free and 500 free. Hurley opened her day by taking the top spot in the 200 by nearly a full second in 1:52.25 before running away with the 500 free in 4:58.19. In the 500 she was followed closely by fellow Boilermaker freshman Kate Mouser at 4:58.29, although Mouser swam the event as an exhibition swimmer.

Mouser later picked up an individual event of her own, winning the 200 IM in 2:06.46.

Hurley is a big addition to Purdue’s freestyle group this year, coming into the school year with times faster than last season’s top performer in multiple events.

The 100 back went to Purdue’s Abby Marcukaitis, who touched at 55.27. She later posted the second fastest time in the 200 back (2:04.06), although Purdue opted to make all of their swimmers in the event exhibition. Teammate Abbie Kehmeier finished with the fastest time in that race, touching at 2:03.69.

In addition to a pair of relay wins, Maggie Love added a pair of individual titles, sweeping the breaststroke events. In the 100 breast, she touched at 1:03.64, while in the 200 breast she tied for first, sharing the win with UIndy’s Celina Schmidt at 2:15.96.

The 50 free saw three of Purdue’s 200 free relay members face off, with Hill coming out on top over Rojas and Bowen. hill touched at 23.71 while Rojas and Bowen touched in 23.92 and 24.06, respectively.

Purdue was dominant on the diving boards, with Sophia McAfee taking the 3-meter title (356.95) and Daryn Wright winning on the 1-meter (306.70).

Brinly Hardy claimed the win in the 100 fly by nearly two seconds, touching at 56.08. Hardy also finished as the runner-up earlier in the meet in the 200 fly, finishing just short of Madeline Greaves (2:05.01).

Men’s Meet Recap

The men’s meet was much closer, with the Greyhounds claiming seven event wins despite finishing seventy points behind Purdue.

UIndy started the meet strong, claiming the top spot in the 400 medley relay following a DQ by Purdue’s A-relay team. The team of Cedric Buessing, Brayden Cole, Elias Noe, and Joao Silva combined to take the win in 3:19.92.

Purdue came back in the 1000 free, with freshman Patrick Broderick taking first in 9:29.57.

The first multiple event winner of the meet came in the 200 free, with Cedric Buessing taking first after leading off his school’s winning 400 medley relay. Buessing was the only swimmer to finish under 1:40 in the race, touching at 1:39.64.

Buessing didn’t stop there, as he finished the day with three individual event titles, all of which were under the Division II B-cut. In the 200 back, he finished with a winning time of 1:47.60 before closing out his meet with a win in the 200 IM (1:50.63).

While Buessing was a multiple event winner for the Greyhounds, Brady Samuels picked up a pair of event titles for the Boilermakers. He started the day by claiming the win in the 100 back, finishing over a second ahead of the field with a time of 48.28. He followed that performance by claiming the top spot in the 100 free in 43.87.

Last season, Samuels was the Boilermaker’s only scorer at the 2023 NCAA Championships with a 16th place finish in finals of the 100 back.

Joining Samuels in securing a pair of wins for Purdue was Coleman Modglin, who swept the breaststroke events. The senior took the 100 breast in 55.89 before grabbing the 200 breast in 2:02.87.

The final multiple event winner from Purdue was Ethan Shaw, who finished with the top time in both the 200 fly and 500 free. In the 200 fly, Purdue finished with the top four times, with Shaw leading the charge in 1:50.38. The Boilermakers were equally dominant in the 500 free, sweeping the podium with Shaw’s 4:36.22 leading the field by over four seconds.

The 50 free featured a tie, with Joao Silva of UIndy and Idris Muhammad of Purdue both touching the wall at 20.35.

Max Miller swept the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events for Purdue, claiming the top spot in both.

The 100 fly was a big event for the Greyhounds, with Elias Noe, Aqeel Joseph and Mihir Ambre finishing first through third. Noe, a freshman, edged out Joseph by just nine one-hundredths of a second to take first in 49.66.
