Purdue Snags Second-Generation Boilermaker Kate Saczawa for 2020-21

Fitter and Faster Swim Clinics is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Kate Saczawa, a two-time USA Swimming Scholastic All-American from Olentangy Liberty High School in Powell, Ohio, has announced her verbal commitment to Purdue University for 2020-21. She will follow in the footsteps of her father, John Saczawa, who swam for the Boilermakers in the 1980s. Her brother Jack Saczawa swam at Michigan State.

“I’m so blessed to announce my verbal commitment to swim and study at Purdue! Thank you to all who have given me support and encouragement throughout this process. So excited to be a part of an amazing team. Boiler UP!”

Saczawa is a backstroke and freestyle specialist. She placed 15th in the 100 back at the 2019 Ohio State High School Division 1 Championships as a junior, clocking in at 57.47. At the 2018 high school meet she was 3rd in the 100 back (55.60) and 11th in the 50 free (23.88); the latter was a lifetime best. In club swimming she swims under head coach Kyle Goodrich at the Ohio State Swim Club. Saczawa competed at 2018 Winter Juniors East in the 50 free, 100 back, and 200 back. She swam at both Winter Nationals and Winter Juniors in December 2017, which is when she swam her best times in the SCY 50/100/200 back. This summer she came in 4th in the 50m back, 4th in the 100m back, and 5th in the 200m back at Ohio Swimming LSC Senior Long Course Championships.

Saczawa will suit up for the Boilermakers with fellow class of 2024 commits Abby Jahns, Abigail Harter, Belle Hinshaw, and Hayley Pike. She is not far outside of scoring range at the conference level in her main events. It took 54.31/1:58.80 to get second swims in the 100/200 back at 2019 B1G Women’s Championships, where Purdue finished 6th of 13 teams.

Top SCY times:

  • 50 back – 26.31
  • 100 back – 55.43
  • 200 back – 2:01.41
  • 50 free – 23.88
  • 100 free – 52.63
