CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Queens women’s swimming enjoyed a successful weekend against a pair of strong opponents, claiming two victories over Vanderbilt and Richmond in a two-day double dual meet. The Royals managed a 181-134 victory over Vanderbilt, while also securing victory over Richmond, 188-127.

Day One
Queens got off to a smoking hot start on the first day of competition, as they concluded the day with a 101-66 lead over Vanderbilt, and a 107-60 lead over Richmond.

The meet began with 400-yard medley relay, as the quartet of Caroline LawrenceAnnika HuberMonica Gumina, and Danielle Melilli dashed to a time of 3:47.63.

Sophie Lange, Rebecca Dany, and Katherine Bailey followed that up by each finishing in the respective top-three positions in the 1000-yard freestyle, with Lange taking first with a time of 10:12.16.

Melilli quickly earned her second victory of the day in the third event, swimming a time of 23.54 in the 50-yard freestyle.

After Huber and Lange earned top-three finishes in the 200 IM and 200 fly respectively, Queens found itself back in the top spot thanks to Gumina’s success in the 100 free (51.14).

The Royals managed first place finishes in the final two events of the afternoon, as Annika Huber placed atop the rest in the 200 breast at 2:15.74, followed by a first-place finish in the 200 free relay (1:35.03).

“I really appreciate having Richmond of the A -10 and Vanderbilt of the SEC come to Charlotte and swim against our women. We had a wonderful start to the meet, the energy was excellent with some really close races. We look forward to tomorrow” said head coach Jeff Dugdale after his team’s impressive first day performance.

Day Two
The second day of competition started off in a very similar fashion as the first. The same group of four that earned a victory in the 400-yard medley relay took the pool for the 200-yard medley relay and were once again able to take the top spot (1:43.81).

Giulia Grasso and Tova Andersson earned points of their own in the 200 free and the 400 IM, respectively, as they each earned second-place finishes.

A bit later on, the Royals managed the placers in the 500 free with Lange taking the spot (4:59.42), followed by Rebecca Dany in second (5:05.57) and Katherine Bailey in third (5:06.10).

As the meet neared its end, Queens put together a second-consecutive top performance in the 100 breast, taking each of the top four spots. Huber grabbed her third victory of the weekend (1:03.04), with Melilli (1:04.50), Maike Jung (1:06.73), and Eden Pescara (1:07.15) taking second-fourth, respectively.

The meet concluded with the always exciting 400 free relay. The Royals put a bow on the weekend by finishing atop the rest in the event with Gumina, Melilli, Grasso, and Lange posting an impressive 3:27.28 final time.

“I feel every team around the country is dealing with sickness and we are no different so in an imperfect situation our entire program stepped up to cover the backs of those missing. Today we are leaving better than we started on Friday. I am very proud of this program.”
