DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte women’s swimming team, winners of the last four NCAA Division II National Championships, opened the 2018-19 season by winning each event in a dual meet against Davidson College on the road.

Queen secured the top two finishes in both the 200-Yard Medley Relay and 400-Yard Freestyle Relay races. In the 200-Yard Medley, Rachel Massaro, Sarah Jane Atkinson, Frouke Beeksma and Wanda Dollmayer turned in a time of 1:47.57, while the team of Polina Lapshina, Kyrie Dobson, Bobbie Gichard and Shelly Prayson clocked a time of 3:31.26 in the 400-Yard Freestyle.

Lapshina, a freshman, got her collegiate career started with two individual wins in the 100-Yard Backstroke and the 100-Yard Freestyle, while fellow freshman Gichard took gold in the 200-Yard Backstroke.

Sophomore Francesca Bains claimed victory in three separate races, reaching the wall first in the 500-Yard Freestyle, 1,000-Yard Freestyle and 200-Yard Butterfly. Queens took the top four spots in the 500-Yard Freestyle and had the top three finishers in the 1,000-Yard Freestyle.

Senior Josefina Lorda-Taylor picked up two wins in the 200-Yard Freestyle and the 200-Yard I.M., while Prayson (100-Yard Breaststroke), Dobson (50-Yard Freestyle), Atkinson (200-Yard Breaststroke) and sophomore Lexi Baker (100-Yard Butterfly) earned wins for the Royals.

The Royals return to the pool in three weeks when Queens hosts University of Indianapolis and Wingate University in a tri-meet on Sunday, Oct. 14 at 10 a.m. in the Levine Center.

DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson women’s swimming & diving team opened their 2018-19 season against Queens University Saturday afternoon at Cannon Pool, falling 195-67.

Despite the setback, several Wildcats had nice showings in their season opener. Isabella McElrath swam a time of 2:11.03 in the 200 Butterfly for her first of two second-place finishes. McElrath returned in the 200 Breaststroke and touched the wall in 2:28.05, while Hannah Gould took third in (2:28.72).

Hope Carpenter claimed second in the 200 Backstroke with Sarah Helen Shepherd (2:10.35) and Julia Goodhead (2:11.74) right behind her for third and fourth place, respectively. Shepherd took second in the 200 IM (2:12.31) with McElrath in third (2:13.53).

Siena Senn had a nice debut as a Wildcat, earning two third-place finishes in the 200 (1:58.64) and 100 Free (55.96).

The 4×100 Free Relay led by Olivia Stanley, who had a third-place showing in the 50 Free (25.44), Alexis LeMone, Senn and Maggie Farrell finished third at 3:44.54. In addition, the 4×50 Medley Relay of Goodhead, Gould, Carpenter and Meredith McGill also came in third (1:51.77).

Davidson will enjoy a two-week break from the pool before traveling to Washington, D.C., for a 12 p.m. meet with Georgetown, Oct. 6.
