The 2021 Queensland Short Course Championships wrapped up today from Brisbane Aquatic Centre.
Putting an exclamation point on the men’s 200m breaststroke was 17-year-old Yannick Zwolsman of Southport. The teen ripped a big-time outing of 2:07.97 to delve under the 2:10 threshold for the first time in his young career.
Entering this meet, Zwolsman held a personal best of 2:11.97 from just this past July. However, splitting 1:01.98/1:05.99, Zwolsman entered entirely new territory today, beating the field by over 5 seconds en route to nearly knocking off Olympic champion Zac Stubblety-Cook’s Queensland record. Stubblety-Cook owns the state record in 2:07.86, so Zwolsman was just .11 off of that marker.
Zwolsman’s swim now ranks him as the 3rd fastest Aussie 17-year-old ever in the event, sitting behind Matt Wilson’s 2:05.08 and Stubblety-Cook’s 2:07.86.
Additional wins came in the form of Thomas Nowakowski snagging the 50m free victory over 16-year-old Flynn Southam of Bond. Nowakowski hit the wall in 22.20 to just hold off Southam’s 22.29.
The women’s 50m free saw Mia O’Leary get it done for golden 24.77 as the only swimmer under 25 seconds in the open catory.
Wow, didn’t this thread get off topic in the comments.
Just here to say well done to Zwolsman, fabulous swim.
Yes. A great swim
Nice to see there are more youngsters coming up in that squad . Great job coach on getting the breastroke leg ready for the Olympic relay .
Serious question – So glad to read these results and congratulations to all the athletes and coaches. Hearing, seeing and reading in the US that AUS is in a total lockdown over COVID. Apparently not? Can someone who was at this meet elaborate as our media has portrayed AUS as more of a oppressive regime now???
Nowhere where it matters . Melbourne only has Matt Temple & Brendon Smith & they are in Italy . Sydney has Matty Wilson & he needs the break.
Rest of the country which is like 99% is fine . The good news is we will again be able to travel overseas in 20years in a nuclear submarine . See you then !
QLD is one of the more open states.
Big lockdowns are in Vic and NSW.
Not sure what the US media is telling you though, it’s probably also wrong.
thank you!
Australia has six states and two “territories” (these are essentially just treated like states but the federal government has more control over them and they get less representation in the Senate). Basically, certain parts of two states (Victoria and New South Wales) are in lockdown. This is made into a huge deal because those states have the biggest populations. But the vast majority of the country has no or minimal (Eg wear a mask in shops and on public transport) restrictions.
Queensland, which is the state the championships were held in, has been locked down this year for a total of 10 days.
US media is absolutely blowing this out of proportion. Yes, it sucks to live in Sydney or… Read more »
Specifically, the US media that DJ is watching, which has an agenda to scare people into believing that the US is going to become a draconian authoritarian state, is blowing it out of proportion.
A lot of NSW isn’t in lockdown anymore either including where I live up north near the QLD border (I usually say I live on the Gold Coast despite that being in QLD).
But isn’t the QLD premier trying to usurp your part of nsw into her state under the guise of border control.
It’d be great if she were successful.
We would welcome you into Qld Troyy
I wish this would happen!
Yeah I said only certain parts of the states. If it wasn’t Sydney and/or Melbourne specifically no one would care.
Oh I live in Robina and my sister lives in Murwillumbah. The border has Been such a hassle for my family!
That’s a tragedy by itself without even considering the border closure. I have family on both sides of the border too.
lol poor Murwillumbah. It’s not that bad
And don’t forget about WA, where I live. We have had a go hard go early lockdown philosophy since April last year ie 1 case = lockdown. In total 15 days of lockdown since then. Currently 0 community cases and zero restrictions and our little state of $2m people just declared a $5B surplus, the economy is flying. Once we get to 80% vaccinated around Jan 22, we will open up for travel and then will have tolerate some infections and some (mostly natural selection) deaths. Until then its life as normal.
Natural selection deaths. Lol
Actually just found out that friends who live in the USA are not vaccinated. Meanwhile in Aus we are fighting to get an appointment.
