Can you name every country to win an Olympic medal in swimming?
Test your knowledge with our latest quiz, which compiles every nation to win an Olympic swimming medal. A few notes:
- The quiz goes back as far as the 1896 Olympics in Athens, Greece. Numbers include the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
- Both pool swimming and open water swimming medals are included.
- Both women and men.
- There are some tricks – a few of these nations no longer exist, though we’ve tried to give credit for the closest modern-day equivalent to nations that no longer exist.
- Nations are listed in order by total medals.
- You have to type out the name of the country – not just the three-letter country code.
- You have five minutes to get them all. Ready? Set? Go!

why did it not give USSR with typing Russia, but gives unified team of Germany and United Team of Germany when typing Germany?
would have had 44 with correct spelling (Yugoslavia) and this one, thoug i totally forgot about hungary -,-‘
36/55
34/55 yikes
Sound of Music, and that’s it.
34/55 :/
This is more of a geography test than anything.
United Team of Germany? That’s a country?!?!?!
That was the USSR minus Lithuania and one other country in 1992.
Scratch that
What you’ve described is the “Unified Team.” There’s another team, the Unified Team of Germany, that competed in 1956, 1960, and 1964. It was the combined teams of East Germany, West Germany, and Saarland – a part of Germany that was occupied by France after the war and competed independently in 1952.
I was 10 short. I needed more time. Spelling was hard! Would not have gotten ANZ. Not sure I would have thought of ZIM or TUN even though I am well aware of Coventry and Ous. Just don’t think those would pop in my mind under the pressure of a timer. Give me 10 minutes and I get 52.
