On Wednesday, in a pre-meet time trial swim at the 2015 Big 12 Championships, in his home pool, University of Texas sophomore Jack Conger swam a 1:39.31 to break the American Record in the 200 yard fly. His teammate John Martens swam next to him.
Watch above as Texas head coach Eddie Reese narrates Conger’s record-breaking swim.
You can see that he built his whole 200, his tempo got faster and faster. Amazing job!
CONGRATS to Jack and the Texas Team.
One word: Beautiful
Crazy…wow…
John Martens had a great swim. Posted a time that was only a few tenths of the great Ricky Berens’ former meet record. A time that will probably get to NCAAs and before a year or 2 ago would have been a lock to make the A final.
And he was completely out of the frame… Conger made him look pedestrian.
Texas is the last team that I would expect to wear Mizzuno suits. I thought I’d see pigs fly before UT endorses a Japanese brand.
Ah, Mizzuno. I was trying to remember which brand that was.
what’s the name of that Mizuno suit?
Ah yes, of course Texas would never endorse a Japanese brand! I’m still shocked that they ever let their swimmers wear Speedo, an Australian brand!
12/7/41 Never Forger.
Good point. How many other NCAA coaches besides Eddie were alive that day? 🙂
@Thetroublewithx I can’t answer that haha but I will say this
There is a very big rivalry with the Japanese. They typically do not send their children to the US for schooling, as opposed to the Chinese and Koreans. This is because they see that their education system, both public and private, is better than that of the US. They also try to rival the US in manufacturing.
So @thelord that is why I mentioned that about Texas, not because it was international. I’m well aware that Speedo is from AUS, but because the suits were Japanese.
I think the rivalry you mentioned is a bit one-sided. I don’t think most Americans, including even Texans, care all that much. Unless you have personal knowledge of UT feeling otherwise. We Americans certainly love our Sony Playstations and Nintendo. So, why not Japanese swimsuits? Personally, I have a Mizzuno volleyball backpack that’s travelled the world with me and has proved quite resilient.
@Thetroublewithx Can you say the same for automobiles? You’d be lying to yourself if you don’t think that some Americans buy ford and not toyota because its American and not Japanese.
Actually it is an English brand now . It was sold to a shell.company owned by some entrepreneur in the 80s who asset stripped it . Then worthless , the brand was sold on to this British outfit .
Imo it I still worthless . Horrible cut & gawd- awful designs . Annette Kellerman’s hand knitted 1912 knee lengths are better cut , sexier & I guess it did help to have the estimated proportions of Venus . I cannot think who they model these on – someone with a fat bum. Wedgie town.
Those underwaters…so jelly of those underwaters
The crazy thing is that there looked to be 2-3 walls that he didn’t hit too well on the first 100. If he times the last stroke into the walls, and taper/shaves, the dude is going to throw down an even more ridiculous time
Totally thought the same thing about the walls on the first 100. When he comes heavy, that time will be sick.
Looked like in the first 100 he was taking five strokes to the wall. This increased to 6 I the second hundred, with 7 on the final 25. It looks like he just needs to figure out if he is slightly faster popping up sooner and taking 6 strokes so he can hit the wall cleaner. Fine tuning at this point. Wow!
not even mad that I wasn’t there to witness this…
