Indiana University freshman Lily King downed the National Age Group Record for 17-18 girls en route to winning the women’s 200 breast at U.S. Winter Nationals. King had put up the third-fastest time of the morning, qualifying in 2:27.01 behind 2015 NCAA champion Kierra Smith of Minnesota, and IU teammate Miranda Tucker.
King jumped out to the early lead in the championship final, turning at 1:09.57 at the 100, slightly ahead of Minnesota’s Smith. Smith went ahead at the 150, but King cranked it into another gear over the last 50 and came home over a half-second faster than Smith. King got her hand to the wall in 2:24.97, eclipsing the girls’ 17-18 national age group record of 2:25.35, set by Amanda Beard in 2000.
King finished the meet with the fastest time by an American so far this year, and her best time by almost 5 seconds. Prior to Federal Way, the fastest King had been was 2:29.83 at 2014 Junior Pan Pacs. This summer, she had qualified for the B final at Nationals with 2:30.65, but had been disqualified in the final.
King now sits in the top seven in the world in the 200 breast so far this season.

Honestly, I didn’t think much of this swim until I saw the previous record was held by Amanda Beard.
