The United States is getting a youth movement where it most badly needs one: the women’s 200 fly. On the final day of the 2015 Arena Pro Swim Series – Austin, 15-year old Cassidy Bayer and 17-year old Katie McLaughlin tied for the event win in 2:09.12, beating out U.S. Olympian Cammile Adams (2:09.25) and European Champion Katinka Hosszu (2:09.90).
A-Final top 3:
T-1. Cassidy Bayer, NCAP – 2:09.12
T-1. Katie McLaughlin, Mission Viejo – 2:09.12
3. Cammile Adams, SwimMAC Carolina – 2:09.25
B Final winner: Emma Seiberligh, Phoenixville YMCA, 2:14.61
C Final winner: Azra Avdic, NASA Wildcat Aquatics, 2:17.62
D Final winner: Ashlyn Fiorilli, Metroplex Aquatics, 2:17.92
Money swim for Cassidy. I see her age group rival (Beata Nelson) making more noise in the NCAA, but Bayer is showing that she can hold up to anybody in the long course pool. Echoes of Dana Vollmer…
Yes & no . You might like to read what the analyses was of her early training on the shoulder injury – which is looking more than transient .
There is a lot to be said for light fly training / racing at an early age . These girls might escape it . Hope they are lucky to keep it up & more growth will be power & not drag.
In a perfect world , young fliers should have a MRI every 6 months for spine & shoulders. Yes it is not a perfect world .
Back to the race above, I was surprised to see Cassidy Bayer hold on like that against a strong finisher like Katie McLaughlin. Great battle between the 2 big US butterfly hopefuls
Thanks for posting all the race videos. I don’t need to do it anymore. 🙂
You’ve probably remarked on the USA swimming youtube channel that they haven’t still posted the men’s 100 breast A-Final.
