Rachel Stege Scratches 200 Free at Summer Champs, Sending Savannah Barr Into A-Final

2024 SPEEDO SUMMER CHAMPIONSHIPS

Rising University of Georgia senior Rachel Stege scratched out of the women’s 200-meter freestyle final at Friday’s Speedo Summer Championships, sending rising Miami (Fla.) senior Savannah Barr into the A-final instead.

Stege qualified 3rd during the 200 free prelims this morning with a time of 2:00.54, not far off her personal-best 1:59.90 from 2019. She didn’t swim this event at the U.S. Olympic Trials last month in Indianapolis, where she placed 13th in the 400 free (4:11.23), 5th in the 800 free (8:28.77), and 6th in the 1500 free (16:10.03).

So far this week in Irvine, Stege has earned runner-up finishes in both the 400 free (4:07.39) and 800 free (8:30.96). The 21-year-old distance specialist still has the 1500 free on her schedule for Saturday afternoon.

Barr placed 9th in prelims this morning with a time of 2:01.93, only about half a second shy of her personal-best 2:01.24 from last July. The 200 free is the only event she is entered in at this year’s Summer Championships.

Friday’s finals session kicks off at 5 p.m. PST with finals of the 200 free, 100 backstroke, and 200 breast on tap for tonight.
