Netherlands-based sprint freestyler Ranomi Kromowidjojo became the first woman ever under 23 seconds in the 50m SCM freestyle on Monday swimming at the FINA World Cup Series stop in Berlin. With a perfect race and against the former world record holder Sarah Sjöström, Kromowidjojo set a new mark at 22.93. Sjostrom’s old record was a 23.10 done at the Moscow stop last week, and the previous record was Kromowidjojo’s in 23.24.
Sarah Sjöström also went under the old record with a 23.00 in finals for 2nd place.
Kromowidjojo is the 2012 Olympic Champion in both, the 50m and 100m freestyle (LC) and won the silver medal at the 2017 (LC) World Championships in the 50 – behind Sjostrom (who broke the World Record in the long course version as well). This has the makings of a phenomenal women’s sprint rivalry headed toward the Tokyo Olympics, especially if Australian Cate Campbell returns to form after skipping the World Championships.
Very impressive Ranomi!
I’d like to see Simone Manuel and Abbey Weitzel have a crack at the 50M WR this winter tapered!
Is there a video of this record-setting swim? She must have been hydroplaning to swim that fast.
She was the first to swim a 51.+ split in a LC relay, wasn’t she? She’s always been a monster anchor leg.

This was retweeted by Sjostrom, btw. She is all class.
Just watched video– amazing! But there’s room for improvement. I thought Kromo was a bit close to the wall when she went into her turn. Her underwaters are phenomenal.
Hard to compare apples and oranges but she is definitely giving ledecky a run for best female swimmer.
It’s not that hard to compare one fruit to another.
Ranomi— WOW!!! Could you imagine her swimming yards? She would destroy NCAAs!
Simone may not agree.
she might, so what? not like she beat ranomi in a 50 ever i guess
Rio 2016!
This time converts to 20.65 using the swimswam converter. The US Open/American record is 21.12 by Weitzeil.
The converters aren’t as accurate as you might think when you talk about the most extreme times, but I could definitely see her going a 20.high.
Fair point, but the rest of the world does not care about yards, therefore it is irrelevant.
Sad Dressel is not doing some WRs at these meets
I mean Sad he isn’t competing as I would expect WRs as a result
He’s smart not to because he can save the records for next year when he can actually get paid for breaking them.
MA should high tail over there and try to salvage his season.
Yeah, Dressel would easily beat Ranomi’s time for sure…
Ranomi to Sarah: “Nah”
Woooooooow!
