Barton, Emmanuel Lead CC Champs, Queens Lead Bluegrass Mountain After Day 1

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – It was a record-breaking opening day of the 2020 Conference Carolinas Men’s and Women’s Swimming Championships at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center.
Barton leads the women’s title race after day one, while Emmanuel is in the lead after day one on the men’s side of things.
Multiple Conference Carolinas Swimming Championships records were broken in the finals with Emmanuel’s Alex Sobers setting the new mark in the men’s 50 yard freestyle (19.72), Barton’s Nicola Macdonald setting the new record in the women’s 50 yard freestyle (23.81), Barton’s Bartlomiej Swiderski (1:49.24) earning the new league record in the men’s 200 yard individual medley, Molly Layde of Lees-McRae garnering the new record in the women’s 1000 yard freestyle (10:36.08), Elder Oliveira of Emmanuel collecting the new top spot in the 1000 yard men’s freestyle (9:21.60) and Julia Simioni of Emmanuel posting the best time in league championships history in the women’s 200 yard individual medley (2:07.36).
The 2020 Conference Carolinas Men’s and Women’s Swimming Championships are being held in conjunction with the 2020 Bluegrass Mountain Conference Men’s and Women’s Swimming Championships.
The championships will continue on Friday with the 400 individual medley, the 100 butterfly, the 200 freestyle, the 200 freestyle relay and the 400 medley relay.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens University of Charlotte men’s and women’s swimming teams both lead their respective standings after day one of the Bluegrass Mountain Championships from the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center.

On the women’s side, Queens scored 244.5 points to build 108.5-point lead over second place Wingate. The men totaled 198 points and lead by 27 points over second place Wingate. In total, the Royals won seven of the eight events.

Senior Sarah Reamy (10:03.04) and junior Francesca Bains (10:05.18) took first and second place, respectively in the opening 1,000-Yard Freestyle race. In the 200-Yard I.M., junior Lexie Baker (2:01.06) earned gold followed by a second-place finish from sophomore Hannah Foster ((2:02.63).

The Royals once again finished 1-2 as senior Polina Lapshina (22.49) and freshman Danielle Melilli (23.15) took the top two spots in the 50-Yard Freestyle. Polina’s time set a new BMC benchmark in the race. The women finished the night with a win in the200-Yard Medley Relay as the team of Rachel MassaroMikaela FullertonGeorgia DaCruz, and Lapshina turned in a time of 1:39.17.

For the men, sophomore Luke Erwee began the night with a win in the 1,000-Freestyle. Fellow sophomore Skyler Cook-Weeks picked up another individual win for the Royals with a time of 19.96 in the 50-Yard Freestyle.

The 200-Yard Medley Relay team of Finn HowardJan DelkeskampRuben Stam, and Dmytro Sydorchenko won the race with a time of 1:27.11 to end the night.

Day two begins tomorrow with prelims at 10 a.m. followed by finals at 5 p.m.
