Last week Canadians took to Saskatoon for Canadian Nationals, this week some of the best youth in Canada took to the pool in Winnipeg, MB. for their chance to show the nation some speed.
GIRLS 100 FLY
12&Under
In the first final of the night 12-year-old Kyla Leibel won the girls 12&under 100m fly in a time of 1:05.15. Behind her was Faith Knelson in 1:05.82. Leibel was ahead of Knelson at the 50m mark 30.26-30.61, but managed to hold off a charging Knelson to come home with the victory.
13-Year-Olds
Victoria Kwan from the J-Dolphins Swim School won the final for the 13-year-old girls in a time of 1:05.39. That time was slower than what it took to win the 12&under final, however was good enough for gold here. Second was Natalia Howat just behind her in 1:05.43. Howat had a lead over Kwan at the 50m mark but wasn’t able to hold on. Moana Houde-Camirand finished third in 1:06.00.
14-Year-Olds
Mary-Sophie Harvey came off a brilliant senior nationals last week that ended with her taking home a national title in the women’s 400m IM at just 14. Tonight in Winnipeg, Harvey managed to grab an age-group national title in the 100m fly with a time of 1:01.29. Rebecca Smith and Toronto Swim Club’s Penny Oleksiak made it a race for Harvey, but ultimately they could not beat her to the wall. Smith finished in second just a little behind Harvey in 1:01.35, Oleksiak was third in 1:01.75.
15-Year-Olds
Ajax Swimmer Danika Huizinga who has had an absolutely amazing season won the 15-year-olds 100m fly tonight in 1:01.23.That time was good enough for a silver medal in the girl’s 16-18 final and was over a second ahead of second place finisher Sarah Darcel. Darcel touched in at 1:02.37 followed by Kelsey Wog in 1:02.74.
16-18-Year-Olds
In the last women’s fly final of the night 18-year-old Jacomie Strydom won the event in a 1:00.77. She didn’t make it a close race either as second place finisher Haley Black finished all the way back in 1:01.56. Kylie Masse rounded out the top three with a 1:02.00 finish.
BOYS 100 FLY
13&Under
Thirteen-year-old Ray Yang from Etobicoke was the man to beat tonight in the men’s 13&under 100m fly, and proved himself with a 1:00.69. The competition was a little farther behind him as Charles Millette grabbed himself a silver with a 1:01.40 and Robert McRae took home the bronze in 1:01.79.
14-Year-Olds
In the final for 14-year-olds Tai Long Singh‘s time of 56.99 absolutely obliterated the rest of the field. That time broke Emil Goin’s boys 13-14 Canadian age group record in the event, which was previously held at 57.31. Incredibly, Singh held off his competitors by over two full seconds as ELITE’s Guillermo Cruz Zuniga took home the silver, Robert Powell the bronze. In that race the top five were all under the 1-minute barrier.
15-Year-Olds
Alexandre Perreault won the 100m fly final for his age group with a time of 55.97. The race was decently close as Colin Gilbert finished second on 56.45, Stephen Calkins third in 56.56. Fourth was Emil Goin who had to see his record go down tonight. Goin was a 57.14 in finals tonight.
16-Year-Olds
Josiah Binnema won the sixteen-year-olds final in 55.66 over Markus Thormeyer’s 55.78.
17-18-Year-Olds
Winning it in the big boys final was Wyatt Yarish with a time of 56.04. That time wouldn’t have even won gold in the 15-year-olds final but was good enough to get him the gold here. With that time he took down Mirando Jarry who was second in 56.34.
GIRLS 200m BACK
12&Under
The winning time in the girls 12&under 200m backstroke final went to WEST’s Renee Liu in 2:25.55. Alyssa Forbes from Oakville was second in 2:25.91. Third was Natalie Peterson in 2:26.41.
13-Year-Olds
Madison Broad dropped a 2:19.59 to win her 200m backstroke final by over a second. Kayla Sanchez from AJAX who had incredible swims which included a few age-group records at Easterns this year finished second behind her in 2:20.85.
14-Year-Olds
In her second final of the night, Penny Oleksiak was able to bring home another medal for the Toronto Swim Club, picking up a silver in 2:18.28. The win went to Lauren Crisp with a 2:16.84. Rebecca Smith who finished second ahead of Oleksiak in the 100m fly final earlier tonight ended up finishing third behind her in 2:19.27.
15-Year-Olds
Meryn McCann from Etobicoke created a huge gap for herself, wining the final in 2:12.44 over Danika Huizinga‘s 2:16.79. Huizinga from Ajax just came off a big 100m fly win, but showed true determination by medalling in a tough double.
16-18-Year-Olds
Backstroke star from Canadian Nationals Danielle Hanus took home her first backstroke win of the meet against 17-year-old rival Kennedy Goss. The two have really been spectacular this year posting some very impressive times. Hanus’ time of 2:14.32 tonight was better than the 2:15.45 Goss threw down. The two finished first and second respectively.
BOYS 200 BACK
13&Under
Etobicoke’s Richie Stokes took home the 200m backstroke in a swift 2:12.93. Stokes was almost a second ahead of Dylan Byers who managed to pickup a silver medal with a time of 2:13.92. Well behind the two was Jimmy Zhang who finished third in 2:16.52.
14-Year-Olds
Conor Fergusson had a huge win in his final, beating second place finisher Tai Long Singh by over four seconds. Fergusson’s time of 2:05.25 was just 0.09 seconds slower than Tobias Oriwol’s 13-14 age-group record of 2:05.25 that was set back in 2000.
15-Year-Olds
Ethan Phillips battled it out with Ajax swimmer Philip Kay tonight, ultimately Phillips came out on top in 2:08.44. Kay finished second in 2:10.67, behind him was Liam Veregin in 2:11.37.
16-Year-Olds
Oakville’s Matthew Mac took down Markus Thormeyer tonight with a speedy 2:06.32. Thormeyer picked up his second silver of the meet after finishing second earlier tonight in the 100m fly final. Thormeyer was a 2:07.19 which tied Josh Zakala for second place.
17-18-Year-Olds
Peter Brothers from Island swimming swam a 2:05.40 to take home gold in his final. He was well ahead of the rest of the field despite a time that would not have even won the 14-year-old final.
GIRLS 50 BREAST
12&Under
Faith Knelson was a 33.31 to win the first final of the women’s 50m breaststroke. Behind her was Ellie Maradyn in 33.74. The two swimmers were the only two to dip under 35-seconds as third place finisher Pilar McCann put up a time of 35.20.
13-Year-Olds
The 13-year-old girls final went to Rachael Anderson who swam a time of 33.96 to take home the win. Zoe Quiviger was second in 34.20 followed by Mona Mc Sharry in 34.55.
14-Year-Olds
Renae Ledoux won her final in a swift 33.03. Finishing second was Oakville Aquatic Club’s Christina Ji in 33.89. Maggie Copland rounded out the top three with a 34.09 finish.
15-Year-Olds
The girls 15-year-old final was even slower than the 12&under final as the winning time was a 33.56 set by Kelsey Wog. Sarah Darcel of Island Swimming grabbed herself a silver medal with a 33.79 performance. Third was Jillian Pauletto who posted a 34.22.
16-18-Year-Olds
The fastest 50m breaststroke swim of the night for a girl of any age went to 16-year-old Bailey Andison with a time of 32.74. Andison was able to out-touch Olivia Paskulin who finished just behind her in 32.90. The top three were very close as Genevieve Robertson took home the bronze just behind Paskulin in 32.93.
BOYS 50 BREAST
13&Under
In the first breaststroke final for the boys Joshua Young came home with a victory in a time of 30.50. That swim was almost two full seconds faster than second place finisher Zachary Godden who touched in at 32.47. Todd Tian got Phelps’d by Godden as he finished third in 32.48, one one-hundredth back.
14-Year-Olds
Leon Quin was the man in the 14-year-old final as he posted a 31.28 that was good for gold. Second place finisher Jackson Xie was well behind in 32.06 followed by Stephen Mojar in 32.20.
15-Year-Olds
Kaelan Freund was the only swimmer to break the 30 second barrier thus far in the meet with a 29.73. ryan Telford was behind him in 30.27, despite the great time it was only good for silver tonight. Oliver Birdman rounded out the top three with a 30.32 performance.
16-Year-Olds
Gregory Farmer was the winner in the 16-year-old final in a time of 20.14. Second was Denis Khristoforov on 30.85 followed by Josh Smigel in 30.87.
17-18-Year-Olds
John Fauteux from GMAC posted the fastest swim of the night with a 29.01 to bring home a gold. Getting the silver was James Guest in a time of 29.14. All of the top four dipped under the 30 second barrier was Colton Peterson and Matthew Loewen swam times of 29.89 and 29.97.
