Records fall, Bolles School in control after prelims at Florida state meet

After the prelims session, the Bolles School looks like the frontrunner to repeat as Florida high school class 1A state champions in both the boys and girls divisions.

The Sharks have already broken one national record with Joseph Schooling’s blistering 45.90 in the 100 fly. The boys team sits atop the finals seedings in all three relays as well as three individual events, even without Schooling swimming on any of the prelims relays. The Bolles girls lead in three events of their own.

Several more notable swims:

Clara Smiddy of South Florida HEAT was 52.9 in the 100 back, a state record and easily the top seed. Smiddy’s future Michigan teammate Emily Kopas sits atop the 100 breaststroke seedings with a 1:02.53 out of prelims.

Kasey Schmidt from the Bolles School cracked the 23-second barrier in the 50, taking the pole position in 22.96, and St. Andrew’s junior Megan Moroney paced the field in the 200 free with a nice time of 1:47.96.

On the boys side, Tampa Prep senior Rasmus Skjaerpe is in line for two titles, grabbing the top seed in the 100 back with a 48.86. He also leads the field for tonight’s 200 IM final.

Jordy Groters of the University School was 55.02 in the 100 breast and could win two events as well.

Full results are available on meet mobile. Live results can be found here.

Class 1A, which comprises Florida’s smallest high schools, will compete in finals tonight starting at 5:30 Eastern Time. Stay tuned to SwimSwam.com for full finals coverage.

Did anyone else see Clara Smiddy’s splits in the 100 back? 26.4-26.5 . Either she has a lot left in her for finals tonight or she is primarily a 200 backstroker because those splits shouldn’t be even!! Would be awesome to see a 52 low or even a 51??? She will go under 2:00 in the IM as well. Glad to see she is back on her horse!

Where was Caleb Dressell? Doesn’t he swim for the Swim Academy or did he not swim high school this year?

No. He’s 2A. As mentioned in the record post, Dressel swims tomorrow. He swims for the club program, but not the school.

What state record did Skjaerpe break? The Florida high school record and 1A record would belong to Murphy from last year at 45.34.
