Redlands Gets a Good Start to the Season

The University of Redlands swim team kicked off the 2013-14 campaign on Saturday with impressive early-season results at the UR October Invitational.  While competing against Division II, III, and NAIA institutions, many Bulldog individuals showed great potential for the season that lies ahead.

For the men, the quartet of junior Jeff Depew (Naperville, IL), freshman Luke Marshall (Lake Oswego, OR), senior David Ortyn (Bainbridge Island, WA), and senior Brent Reed (Dublin, CA) combined for a third-place time of 1:40.34 in the 200 Medley Relay.

In the 100 Back, Depew registered an individual third-place mark, uncorking a time of 53.41.  Later on, he bettered his finish in the 200 Back with a time of 1:56.98 for second place.  Moreover, he capped off his day individually with a second-place time of 1:56.69 in the 200 IM.

In the 50 Free, the senior duo of Spencer Peugh (Alamo, CA) and Reed notched fourth and fifth-place finishes, respectively.  Peugh touched the wall in 22.32, while Reed finished right behind with a mark of 22.41.  Additionally, Peugh recorded a third-place time of 49.32 in the 100 Free.

Elsewhere, Ortyn impressed in the 400 IM, swimming a third-place time of 4:22.41.

Capping off the men’s performances was the foursome of Peugh, senior Nikolai Paloni (Greenwich, CT), junior Ryan Connolly (Lafayette, CA) and Reed in the 200 Free Relay with a time of 1:28.68, finishing in third place.

On the women’s side, junior standout Chandra Lukes (Escondido, CA) shined, notching second and third place finishes on the day.  In the 50 Free, she uncorked a swift time of 25.15 for second place, while in the 100 Back, Lukes registered a solid mark of 1:03.52 for a third-place showing.

On top of Lukes’ performances, sophomore Lauren Robeznieks (Tigard, OR) tallied a third-place mark in the 50 Free, touching the wall close after Lukes with a time of 25.43.  In the 100 Free, she also performed well with a mark of 54.47 for third place.

Freshman Jessica Rivers (Renton, WA) impressed in her first-ever collegiate meet, recording a fourth-place mark in the 100 Breast (1:11.38) and a fifth-place time in the 200 IM (2:17.46).

Finally, highlighting the day for the Bulldog women was the first-place-winning foursome in the 200 Free Relay.  Junior Summer Harp (San Bernardino, CA), Rivers, Robeznieks and freshman Ellie Jaques (Covina, CA) won an exciting race against the top-notch competition, touching the wall in 1:43.12, just 0.13 seconds ahead of Cal Baptist for the top spot.
