Belarusian Ilya Shymanovich was the fastest swimmer on both the opening (27.48) and closing (31.95) 50s to win the men’s 100 breast in a time of 59.43. Shymanovich is ranked second in the world this year with his 58.29 from March.
Mare Nostrum Record holder Yasuhiro Koseki had a strong back-half of 31.99 to take the runner-up spot in 1:00.00, and Michael Andrew (1:00.80) narrowly held off countryman Nic Fink (1:00.82) for third. Fellow American Reece Whitley touched just behind the 2 for 5th in 1:01.08.
Getting really good training in with boys!
It is going to be interesting to see how he progresses in long course and any big summer meets. Then in the Fall, it will be fun to see if he branches out to other events besides breast stroke. With Seliskar and Thomas graduating this year at Cal, maybe Reece will work on 200/400 IMs or some other stroke. I think Cal will be in Georgia again in the late Fall, and there will be some strong college teams again participating— teams which we don’t see out here on the west coast of California.Of course the Olympic season may see a few top swimmers by pass a season.
I sense he is slightly disappointed with NCAAs. Like David Nolan, his HS swimming was so ridiculously fast, he’ll have a tough time with dropping time. I am still waiting to see him pop a :59 and 2:08. Maybe at summer nationals.
