16-year-old Reece Whitley was on another level when he stepped up for the 200 breast final at the 2016 U.S. Winter Junior Championships (East). Whitley, a swimmer for the Penn Charter Aquatic Club, ripped a 1:52.37 to set a new 17-18 National Age Group Record. That took over a second off the previous record, which Whitley had set at 1:53.66 in 2015.
When looking at the splits comparison, we can see that a good portion of Whitley’s improvement came on the back half. When he previously set the NAG Record, he came home with a 29.83 on the last 50. Tonight, he was a full second faster on that 50 alone, with a 28.86 final split. He was also about a half second faster on the 2nd 50, lowering that split from a 28.90 to a 28.34.
Splits Comparison:
Swimmer | 1st 50 split | 2nd 50 split | 3rd 50 split | 4th 50 split | Final Time |
Reece Whitley (2016) | 25.99 | 28.34 | 29.18 | 28.86 | 1:52.37 |
Reece Whitley (2015) | 25.82 | 28.90 | 29.11 | 29.83 | 1:53.66 |
With that swim, Whitley now heads home with 4 individual gold medals from the meet. Throughout the weekend, he won the 100 breast, 200 breast, 200 IM, and 400 IM.
Glad he rebounded from the 100 breast. He looked pretty obviously disappointed with his swim. Total opposite from his 200 breast.
Great performances for one of the USA’s shining stars.
