14-year old Minnesotan Regan Smith, who’s already a Minnesota High School State Championship runner-up before ever taking a high school class, has broken Missy Franklin‘s 13-14 National Age Group Record in the 100 long course meter backstroke.
Swimming on Friday morning in heats at the 2106 U.S. Open Championships, Smith swam a 1:00.31, which is better than the 1:00.50 that Franklin did in the event in 2009. Franklin did her swim in the final of that year’s Junior National Championships which qualified her for her first international team – the 2009 Duel in the Pool.
Comparative splits:
- Smith ’16: 29.23/31.08 = 1:00.31
- Franklin ’09: 29.54/30.96 = 1:00.50
Smith’s previous lifetime best in the event was a 1:00.96 done 5 weeks ago at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials.

Minnesota high school swimming fans, correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m pretty sure Regan Smith placed 2nd in both her individual events at high school state her 7th grade year, and didn’t swim the high school season in 8th grade. Nonetheless, she’s amazing and congratulations to her on her new NAG!
Yes in 2014-15 season she finished 2nd in both of her individual events (100BK and 100FL) behind senior Zoe Avestruz (now swimming for the Gophers). Times (Finals) were: Zoe/Regan 53.36/54.73 (100FL) 51.98/54.21 (100BK). If she returns to swim for High School in coming years, she should be able to break the national HS record as well. Awesome swimmer!
