Regan Smith Leads Money Earners At PSS Knoxville; Grothe Leads Series Earnings

2020 PRO SWIM SERIES – KNOXVILLE

Regan Smith used two wins, two silver medals and the prelims swim bonus to top all money earners at the Knoxville Pro Swim Series at $6,500.

Smith did not attend the series opener in Greensboro, but already sits #3 in overall series earnings. Distance man Zane Grothe added $5,000 in Knoxville and leads all series earners by $2,000. Simone Manuel is second, also hitting both stops so far.

Smith won the prelims bonus, given to the top prelims swim in FINA points. That’s worth $1500. The men’s bonus went to Nyls Korstanje.

Note: we’re using the 2019 FINA Power Points linked in the series opener, rather than the updated 2020 FINA Power Points.

I hope USA swimming puts that money into an account for the athletes to have once they are done collegiately or decide to go pro.

How does that work with college students? Does she not get the money, or is it put in an account for after college? I’m not knowelegeable about NCAA rules, or is she going pro? Again, I haven’t kept up on this subject. Thanks

How does that work with high school students?…………..Good questions, however. Regan is a high school senior.

Well she needs to purchase a reliable car to get to and from swim practice so in my book she should be taking all the prize money she can get her hands on. Same for Carson

Usa swimming will pay them for expenses and what the NCAA and school compliance allows! Let’s not stress over it. These aren’t the first HS athletes to earn some prize money and they won’t be the last!

Not necessarily stressing, but important to know. Last year, Regan was upset about not being able to keep her WR bonuses after Gwangju, & a vigorous discussion here followed about amateurism, etc. California legislators then took on the NCAA by legally protecting athletes’ rights to earn from their images, etc. It’s CERTAINLY not over – just getting heated up, & the ramifications are vast.

Jared was a YMCA and high school swimmer in northern Minnesota, and spent his college years swimming breaststroke and occasionally pretending …
