Regan Smith Rocks 51.7 100 Fly For New 13-14 NAG Record

2016 U.S. WINTER JUNIOR CHAMPS – WEST

After dismantling the 13-14 National Age Group Record in the 100 fly during day 3 prelims at the 2016 U.S. Winter Junior Championships (West), Regan Smith cranked it up a notch in the final to lower the record to a blazing 51.73. That also broke the Texas A&M Pool Record, which previously stood as a 52.33 done by Katie Drabot in 2015.

With that time, Smith, a 14-year-old swimmer for the Riptide Swim Team, won her first junior championships gold. Smith was pushed by Aquazot Swim Club’s Eva Merrell, who took 2nd in 51.93. That was a best time for Merrell, who sits as the 4th fastest swimmer of all time among 15-16 girls.

Over the course of today, Smith has lowered the NAG record by over a full second. She first broke the former recored of 52.97 held by Tristen Ulett with her 52.22 in prelims. Tonight, she was a few tenths fastest on each of her 50 splits to lower it once again.

Splits Comparison:

Swimmer 1st 50 split 2nd 50 split Final Time
Regan Smith 2016 (finals)  24.24  27.49 51.73
Regan Smith 2016 (prelims)  24.45  27.77 52.22
Tristen Ulett 2016  24.93  28.04 52.97
