Regan Smith Says Scratches Due to “Stomach Bug/Food Poisoning”

PRO SWIM SERIES – KNOXVILLE

Three-time Olympic medalist Regan Smith says she’s dealing with “a stomach bug/food poisoning” that kept her out of two A-finals on Thursday night and two prelims races on Friday morning.

After missing the 200 freestyle and 50 backstroke A-finals on Thursday as well as the 200 butterfly and 400 free prelims on Friday morning, Smith posted an update on her Instagram story.

“Popping in to say I came down with a stomach bug/food poisoning after prelims yesterday,” Smith wrote on Friday. “Taking it day by day.”

Smith was the top seed in 200 fly and the No. 26 seed in the 400 free on Friday. Her status remains up in the air for the 200 IM and 100 free on Saturday, where the 20-year-old American is seeded 10th and 14th, respectively.

Trying to remember Smith ever backing down from someone/something and coming up blank. Pretty lousy insinuation.

Aren’t jokes supposed to be funny, SCCOACH?

Some people aren’t meant to try and be funny. You’re one of them. You happen to be one of those people that tells a joke and people look at and move on in 2 seconds because nobody cares.

Not while you’re insulting young female athletes. Jokes are only funny if they punch up. Punching down like you do is pathetic.

You all caring so much about a super minor joke that fell flat is pathetic. I’m not sitting here rooting for Regan Smith to fail. Relax and get off your high horse . It wasn’t even an original joke I got it from people on here saying that Dressel had Popoviciitis when he pulled out of worlds

As you said, your “joke” fell flat. It wasn’t remotely funny. Just walk away & try to learn something from it, instead of being all defensive and trying to flip the blame onto your critics.

Seems like a weird place and time to die on a hill, the comment threads on swimswam.

I find this up/down system confusing. Not that it was such a funny joke or anything, but it seems like a strange hierarchy that would have a swimswam reply guy wielding power over an Olympian/world record holder. I’d bet that Regan Smith has learned to shrug off silly jokes like this by now.

Is a non-pro-athlete who’s making a swim coach’s salary (aka not good) making a joke about a pro athlete making a million dollars a year “punching down”?

Seems weird to always assume that female athletes are somehow “down” compared to everyone else. Seems in this case that Regan is an “up” versus most of us commenting here, right? She definitely is way above me in the foodchain.

It’s coach > athlete, power dynamic. Older adult > younger adult… to name a couple.
