Day one of the 2018 Central Zone Sectionals in Akron, Ohio, featured finals for the women’s and men’s 200 back, 50 free, and 200 breast, as well as the women’s 800 free relay.
16-year-old Regan Smith got the night started with an almost unbelievable 1:48.30 200 back, splitting 25.67/27.10/27.69/27.84, setting a new 15-16 national age group record and becoming the #4 performer of all-time. In second was Michigan Lakeshore Aquatics’ Kathryn Ackerman in 1:56.36, followed by Southeastern Swim Club’s Abigail Harter in 1:59.43. Michigan Lakeshore’s Ian Miskelley won the men’s race in 1:46.87 (24.35/26.25/27.57/28.70), followed by PEAQ’s Jack Fitzpatrick in 1:47.87. In third was FAST’s Kaden Smesko in 1:48.15.
Drop Aquatics’ Ashley Turak won the women’s 50 free in 22.55, followed by the JCC Sailfish’s Olivia Livingston in 22.90. In third was Racer X Aquatics’ 13-year-old Zoe Skirboll. Michigan Lakeshore’s Skyler Cook-Weeks won the men’s race in 20.30, followed by teammate Cameron Peel in 20.56, and Mercy Healthplex’s Gregory Kalin in 20.63.
Laura Goettler of Lake Erie won the women’s 200 breast in 2:11.62 (29.49/33.60/34.16/34.37). Kathryn Ackerman took second in 2:14.39, followed by Drop Aquatics’ 14-year-old Madeline Greaves in 2:15.66. 15-year-old Joshua Matheny, of PEAQ, won the men’s race in 1:58.26. West Ottowa’s Derek Maas was second in 2:00.10, and FAST’s Richard Kurlich third in 2:01.58.
Michigan Lakeshore team of Caroline Sisson, Lillian Brandt, Kathryn Ackerman, and Elle Giesler split 1:51.08/1:53.18/1:46.74/1:52.08 for the winning time of 7:23.08 Riptide took second place in 7:27.10, followed by Irish Aquatics in 7:35.45.
Big question: Will Regan smith go pro or swim in college? She seems very bright so I’m sure she will make the right choice for her either way. She’s very versatile which would help for teams like UGA, Stanford, Cal, or UVA.
