On the second night of competition at the 2015 Japanese collegiate championships a meet record was downed in the women’s 400m medley relay.
Led off by 2015 University Games bronze medallist Yuka Kawayoke, the team was put in good contention for the record right from the start. Kawayoke split a 1:01.52 giving a solid lead to Misaki Sekiguchi.
Sekiguchi dove in to swim the breaststroke portion of the relay, splitting a 1:07.45 to keep their record hopes alive. Harima Millet entered soon after with a 58.94 split on the butterfly leg followed by Rika Tinwei who brought them home in a 55.47.
Collectively the girls swam a time of 4:03.38 to break the previous championship record of 4:03.92.
That was the only record broken on the second night of competition, however several other swimmers came close to bettering the championship marks in several events.
Masayuki Umemoto came close to the championship record in the 100m butterfly with a winning time of 52.51. Umemoto, who won bronze in the 200m butterfly at the 2015 University Games, finished just shy of the 52.27 record.
Chihiro Igarashi wasn’t far off the record in the women’s 200m freestyle as well, sporting a 1:59.05 winning time. The current record stands at 1:58.37.
The competition which has already proven to be fast will be completed Sunday night after the third day of finals.
