The women’s 100m breaststroke event saw Molly Renshaw break the British Record in tonight’s semi-finals in Budapest.
Renshaw stopped the clock in a time of 1:06.21 en route to claiming the 3rd seed behind leader Sophie Hansson of Sweden and Martina Carraro of Italy. Those two competitors earned times of 1:05.69 and 1:06.09, respectively.
As for Renshaw, her outing here slices just over half a second off of her previous career-best, a time which stood at the 1:06.72 she produced just this past April at the British Swimming Championships.
Tonight, Renshaw opened in 31.59 and closed in 34.62 to become the fastest woman ever from Great Britain. Her 1:06.21 surpasses the 1:06.34 Siobhan-Marie O’Connor logged at the Scottish Championships in 2016. O’Connor is absent from these European Championships due to a chronic illness and stated her future is to be determined.
Renshaw’s effort here checks her in among the top 30 performers all-time worldwide in the history of the 100m breaststroke event. She’ll also be contesting the 200m distance in addition to tomorrow night’s 1breast final, owning the British national record in that longer event in 2:20.89 from the aforementioned British Swimming Championships.
