Reports: Big Ten Voted 12-2 To Cancel Football This Fall

Radio host Dan Patrick says a source has told him that the Big Ten voted 12-2 to cancel their fall football season amid the worldwide coronavirus pandemic, which would have huge ripple effects on the other Power-5 conferences this week.

Over the weekend, major sports media outlets started reporting that the 14 presidents of Big Ten schools had met on Saturday and were leaning toward cancellation.

On his radio show Monday morning, Patrick said a source revealed to him that the Big Ten will officially cancel their season tomorrow.

“The Big Ten and Pac-12 will cancel their football seasons tomorrow. The ACC and the Big 12 are on the fence,” Patrick said. “The SEC is trying to get a delay to have teams join them.”

The Dan Patrick Show Twitter account reported that Iowa and Nebraska were the two Big Ten schools pushing to play.

Previous reports suggested that the Big Ten presidents would like to postpone the football season until the spring. It’s not clear yet if the Big Ten vote was for a wholesale cancellation of the season, or if a spring football season could still be an option.

The NCAA gave each of its three divisions until August 21 to make decisions on whether to hold championships in fall sports. Division II and Division III canceled quickly, but Division I has not yet come to a decision. The mid-major MAC canceled its fall athletic season, but the Big Ten would be the first Power-5 conference to cancel football – a drastic step both athletically and financially, as football is a revenue driver for most college athletic departments.

Mistake if they do – its not a “football” versus “no risk” situation. If they play the players are tested at least twice a week, under constant medical and behavioral supervision, free healthcare if they do get sick. With no football – they are in the same risk pool as the general population, no free medical care if sick. Given the way young people are behaving these days, as a parent I’d prefer they do the play option.

I believe that they envision a scenario where they can hold sports in the spring with spectators in the stands in more places, and that could bring more revenue back.

Football primarily, but at some schools, especially the Big Ten, this means volleyball as well.

Looks like it is not over just yet. Big 10 Presidents will meet at 6:00pm to make a “final” decision.

Hope they give it a “go” for fall campaign. As an SEC fan, I think they ought to consider playing only a 10 game conference schedule limiting attendance.

So much winning. I still can’t get used to it all.

I could see that. 😜

IMO, that changed a lot of the “we have to play in the fall” outlook. Kick the can down the road at 3.75% and if you get most of revenue back in 2021, prob manageable

Will still see cuts but wouldn’t be as deep.

Hygiene is definitely part of the problem, some people are nasty out here. Jerome Adams, Dr. Fauci, and Trump need to recommend everyone to brush their teeth, brush their tongue, and rinse with listerine mouthwash every day. I guaranty covid 19 cases would drop significantly.

Good idea. Also, if they replaced gatorade with bleach so players can drink on sideline, I bet they could have played the season without any infection.

Or make hydroxychloroquine available since its proven to be effective.

I don’t know if it would help covid or not. In general oral hygiene is important to overall health, but comment was kind of humorous 😄

Nebraska and Iowa voted against.

Why isnt postponing the season a viable option? It seems like no one wants to talk about just pushing things back until we have a better grasp on the pandemic

That’s the exact thing everyone said in the spring. Many conferences are talking about postponing but you can’t postpone every sport to the spring. It’s not feasible.

Why not? Everyone would rather have a little less practice time and be able to play.

Especially not football when you then will play 2 seasons with months of each other. You will also likely see any high level draftpick not participate for fear of injury and so as not to interfere with the draft evaluation.

Totally agree👍. Can’t see a spring football season what with the 2022 football season looming just a few months from the ending of it. Burn out, possibly injuries, etc. would be major factors!!

If all of college football gets cancelled, then A&M can update that national championship plaque they gave Jimbo!
